Summary:
The EHS Manager is responsible for the Waste Water, Company Water System, Safety and Environmental departments. Performs a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of all treatment plant equipment and machinery. Compiles and submits required Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports. Performs research, development, and implementation of policies that improve the organization’s environmental impact without detracting from other business goals. Develop green policies and initiatives that emphasize the proper use of environmental resources with a focus on sustaining these resources for future generations. Ensure that Safety throughout the company is maintained and establish safety practices and policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage the daily work activities of all staff across multiple shifts responsible for the operation and routine maintenance of the Waste Water, Safety and Environmental departments. Provides technical assistance and in-house training to plant operators. Promotes efficiency and safety in the treatment process.
- Operates equipment and machinery used in the treatment process such as pumps, aerobic digesters, blowers in aeration tanks, and media filters; adjusts return rates and air rates; disinfects plant effluent and releases treated water to receiving stream; supervises the contractual sludge removal from the treatment process.
- Services upon requisitions treatment equipment and machinery, including: greasing pumps and motors, changing oil in compressors, aerators and filters; repairing and maintaining meters, gauges and other plant equipment
- Manages the wastewater treatment process in accordance with all applicable laws, ordinances and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations; inspects machinery, equipment and control panels for defects; measures the rate of flow of effluent water through the treatment plant; adjusts the treatment process when laboratory analysis detects problems.
- Manage and/or perform the collection of water samples throughout the treatment process; supervises the laboratory analysis of samples taken from treatment plants
- Ensures that data is compiled and submitted for all required records and reports being sent to the Director of Public Works; prepare monthly, semi-annual, quarterly, and annual Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports, daily activity records and equipment repair reports.
- Provides significant input and/or contributes to the development of departmental policies and procedures, and occasionally contributes to the development of policies that affect other departments.
- Maintains an inventory and authorizes the requisitions of budgeted materials and supplies.
- Follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor. Reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible, but no later than end of the employee's work shift. Follows recognized safe work practices.
- Ensures that dumpster haul off for filter cake and water trucks to pick up 1st waste water are maintained
- Manage the daily work activities of the Company RO Water system.
- Create process flows for water destination starting at each source until it reaches the wastewater system.
- Maintain paperwork associated with the RO water system. Create processes or SOP’s for RO Water if needed. Maintain close contact with RO water system provider (Evaqua).
- Write and maintain SOPs for plant wide procedures; Examples include but are not limited to: Hazardous Waste Container Inspection, Raw Material Spill Response, Product Spill Response, Spill Kit Inspection, Hazardous Material and Hazardous Waste Spill Response.
- Research and acquire certifications required to stay compliant with all regulatory agencies.
- Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) rule, and the Storm water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) requirements.
- Work with the “Sanitation” department Manager in order to control the waste going to the in house wastewater treatment department.
- Coordinate spill response drills and training. Assist in emergency planning and preparedness activities as required by EPCRA.
- Conduct environmental audits and inspections to identify compliance gaps and recommend corrective actions. Ensure proper recordkeeping and documentation of inspections, findings, and follow-up actions.
- Develop and implement waste management programs, including proper handling, storage, treatment, transportation, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in accordance with RCRA regulations.
- Facilitate safety training. Includes safety discussions/topics in management meetings. Demonstrates involvement in safety inspections by performing safety self-inspections. Demonstrates involvement in behavioral observations. Conducts safety talks according to established schedule (minimum--monthly). Reviews and signs off on all accident investigation reports and assures that corrective actions are implemented. Oversees corrective action for safety violations.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated.
- Communicate effectively with direct reports as well as senior management
- Maintain a clean work area
Education and Experience:
· Completion of an Associate's degree or two (2) years of technical or business school and five (5) years of experience as a Wastewater Treatment Operator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
· Must possess the following certifications and/or licenses:
o Environmental Protection Agency Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator
o Management courses
o
§ Required to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
Requirements:
- Candidates should have the ability to stand for a minimum of 11 hours a day, performing manual duties
- Must be able to lift 50-100 lbs.
- Must be flexible to work weekends and overtime when needed
- Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally
- Strong attention to detail
- Willingness to learn and ability to adapt to a changing environment
