Special Education Resource Teacher Duties and Responsibilities

  • Individualized Instruction: Provide targeted instruction tailored to the unique needs of each student with disabilities, adapting teaching strategies, materials, and assessments accordingly.
  • IEP Development: Collaborate with IEP teams to create, review, and revise individualized education plans (IEPs) that outline goals, accommodations, and support services.
  • Inclusive Education: Promote an inclusive classroom environment by facilitating peer interactions, offering support to classroom teachers, and ensuring accessibility for all students.
  • Progress Monitoring: Regularly assess student progress, collect data, and adjust instructional strategies to meet individual goals and objectives outlined in IEPs.
  • Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, guardians, and other professionals involved in the students' education to share progress updates and strategies for support.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with best practices in special education, attend relevant workshops and training sessions, and continuously improve your knowledge and skills.
  • Behavior Management: Implement behavior intervention strategies and techniques as needed to address challenging behaviors and foster a positive classroom environment.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of student progress, IEPs, and related paperwork in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Special Education Resource Teacher Requirements and Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • State Certification: Valid teaching certification in Special Education from the state or jurisdiction in which you will be working.
  • Special Education Expertise: In-depth knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices, including experience with various disabilities and teaching strategies.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Collaborative Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with general education teachers, support staff, and parents to develop and implement effective education plans.
  • Patience and Empathy: Demonstrated patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping students with disabilities succeed.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust teaching methods and approaches to meet the evolving needs of students.
  • Organization: Strong organizational skills to manage IEP documentation, assessments, and instructional materials.
  • Problem-Solving: Effective problem-solving skills to address individual student challenges and adapt instructional strategies accordingly.
