MidAmerica St. Louis Airport, located at 9656 Air Terminal Drive, Mascoutah, IL 62258 is currently considered a “primary non-hub” airport. Publicly owned airports receiving scheduled passenger service that have more than 10,000 passenger boardings—also known as enplanements—each year are considered primary airports.
Job Summary
Serves as the senior on‑duty Public Safety official on the assigned shift, providing operational leadership for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), security, and airport operations under the direction of the Chief or Deputy Chief of Public Safety. Coordinates emergency response activities, assigns and oversees shift duties, assists with personnel training, and acts as the Senior Fire Official in the absence of command staff. Maintains readiness to perform all Public Safety Officer functions, exercising situational awareness, sound judgment, and compliance with established procedures, regulatory requirements, and mutual‑aid coordination during routine operations and airport emergencies.
High school diploma or equivalent and continued eligibility to work in the United States, including possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license, FOID card, CPR/AED certification, and the ability to pass all required physical, TSA, and regulatory screenings. The role involves shift work and requires achievement of FAA Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting qualifications within three months of hire and AAAE Airport Certified Employee (ACE) – Airfield Operations certification within one year. Must maintain technical proficiency in airport security, fire suppression and emergency response, personnel direction, and written reporting while meeting all licensing, certification, and fitness requirements throughout employment.
Regular, full-time, non‑exempt, position reports to the ARFF Chief and is based on site at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. Requires authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship, compliance with all airport badging, access, and security requirements, and availability for infrequent domestic travel.
Essential Job Functions
- Assist in the training of personnel assigned to shift.
- Assign duties to personnel assigned to shift.
- Assist, under the direction of the Chief of Public Safety or the Deputy Chief of Public Safety, under the supervision of Aircraft Rescue Firefighting, security operations and airport operations occurring on the assigned shift.
- Act as the Senior Fire Official in the absence of the Chief of Public Safety and the Deputy Chief of Public Safety.
- Coordinate airport rescue and firefighting personnel, and all responding agencies during an airport emergency
- Must possess skills and knowledge and have ability to perform all duties of a Public Safety Officer on assigned shift. (See below)
- Skills and Knowledge
- Must have capacity to acquire skill in the operation, use, and maintenance of firefighting equipment and in the fighting of fires.
- Must have ability to maintain order among large groups of people in emergencies.
- Must possess situational awareness, alertness and skill in detecting and recognizing safety hazards.
- Must have knowledge of basic first aid treatment.
- Must have ability to understand and carry out instructions.
All required skills, knowledge, experience, or certification must comply with the terms of this Agreement or be waived in writing by the Airport Director.
Level of Authority: Senior individual contributor with ARFF and operational responsibilities, operating within established procedures and regulatory frameworks.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
Licenses, Certifications & Eligibility
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Must be a citizen or lawful resident of the United States.
- Must possess a valid Illinois State motor vehicle operator's license throughout the employee's employment.
- Must pass a physical fitness exam as may be required by applicable law and maintain the required fitness level and pass required tests throughout the employee's employment.
- Must pass a Transportation Security Agency (TSA) background check.
- A felony Driving Under the Influence (DUI) conviction will be disqualifying.
- Must have and maintain a current CPR and AED certification.
- Must possess an Illinois Firearms Owner Identification Card (FOID).
- Position involves shift work.
Technical & Functional Skills
- Must become an AAAE Airport Certified Employee (ACE) in Airfield Operations within one year of hire.
- Must acquire a working knowledge of the Airport Security Plan and Basic Security Practices.
- Must acquire knowledge of fire suppression, fire prevention and combat (tactical) techniques, and equipment particularly as applied to the saving of lives and aircraft.
- Must have the ability to direct other personnel while performing the same duties.
- Must have the ability to prepare explicit reports on the handling of routine and emergency duties.
- Must meet FAA minimum Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting requirements within three months of start date.

- Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
- Infrequent U.S. domestic travel may be required
- Must comply with airport badging, access, and security requirements

Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and balance
- Regular lifting and movement of objects exceeding 75 pounds
- Vision requirements include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
