Job Summary

The State Income Tax Director is responsible for directing all aspects of the company’s state and local income tax functions. This role ensures the accuracy of state tax compliance, tax provisions (ASC 740), and tax planning initiatives. This individual will collaborate with the state tax audit function, manage relationships with state tax authorities, and monitor legislative changes to mitigate risks and identify tax-saving opportunities. This role determines tax compliance requirements and ensures that those requirements are met. Partners with key stakeholders throughout the Company. Participates with the tax planning teams in the development of significant tax strategies, communicates strategies to the tax compliance team. Oversees the execution of tax strategies in our as filed tax returns to reduce the Company’s overall tax burden. Leads cross-functional team(s), providing direction, knowledge and advice to team members and senior management. Oversees and directs technical issue analysis and solution development. Drives process improvement opportunities for tax function through innovative, technology and motivational leadership.

Job Responsibility
  • Directs and oversees the tax process for state income tax compliance. Oversees and provides Directs and oversees the tax process for state income tax compliance. Oversees and provides recommendations to Sr Director and SVP Tax, as necessary to ensure that the tax filings minimize the overall tax liability to Walgreens leading to tax cash savings, which directly impacts EBITDA.
  • Compliance responsibilities include income tax, franchise tax, CAT, some gross receipts, annual reports and various local/city filings.
  • Responsible for estimated payments, state provision calculations and RTP analysis.
  • Researches and monitors state legislation and legal developments to analyze state tax impacts on the business.
  • Establishes project teams, assigns responsibilities, and facilitates meetings as needed to ensure timely goal attainment.
  • Prepares management reports and participates in presenting results to senior management regarding the tax related items and evaluations worked.
  • Oversees the evaluation of state deferred tax asset recognition and preparing appropriate documentation to support the company’s position.
  • Ensures compliance with accounting principles and adherence with company policy.
  • Ensures close collaborates between Accounting and Finance on tax and broader accounting issues impacting the Company’s financials and with Treasury on cash tax projections.
  • Partners with leaders in other areas of Accounting to ensure the proper tax effects of transactions for state tax purposes.
  • Mentors, reviews analysis, and leads team through research of applicable state and local tax laws, if necessary, to resolve complex tax and technical issues for the Company.
  • Mentors, coaches, and develops employees through orientation, training, establishment of objectives, communication of policies and rules, and constructive discipline; builds morale and motivation. May be responsible for managing retained and outsourced staff and for providing successful service levels according to the defined Statement of Work established by the Company’s management team. Develops and supports programs and initiatives to develop, mentor, and coach employees.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or Economics and at least 6 years experience in public accounting, corporate tax, accounting firm, government agency or company with sales in excess of $1 billion. OR High School/GED and at least 9 years experience in public accounting, corporate tax, accounting firm, government agency or company with sales in excess of $1 billion.
  • At least 4 years experience with technical tax laws, regulations and interpreting tax laws.
  • Experience with accounting for income taxes under both GAAP and IFRS.
  • Experience preparing tax provisions including foreign/domestic income sources and current/deferred provisions.
  • Experience in identifying operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems.
  • At least 4 years experience managing internal resources or outside consultants and project budgets.
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Excel (for example: using SUM function, setting borders, setting column width, inserting charts, using text wrap, sorting, setting headers and footers and/or print scaling).
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft PowerPoint (for example: applying a theme, formatting character spacing, inserting a picture, changing slide layout and theme colors, adding transitions, customizing slide numbers, changing chart style and/or formatting font).
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Word (for example: inserting headers, page breaks, page numbers and tables and/or adjusting table columns).
  • Experience with tax reporting/compliance software such as OneSource or Corp Tax.
  • At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 3 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to/at least 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Taxation or Finance
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or Economics and at least 12 years experience in public accounting, corporate tax, and/or accounting at a firm, government agency or company with sales in excess of $1 billion. OR High School/GED and at least 15 years experience in public accounting, corporate tax, accounting firm, government agency or company with sales in excess of $1 billion.
  • CPA designation OR JD
  • Knowledge of tax laws in multiple non-US jurisdictions.
