Shipping and Packaging Lead

Position : Shipping and Packaging Lead

Pay: $22 - $24/hr

Location: Naperville, IL

Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8 am - 4:30 pm, Saturdays as needed

Position Summary
The Shipping and Packaging Lead oversees all outbound packaging and shipping operations to ensure products are properly packaged, protected, labeled, and shipped in line with customer requirements, job travelers, and internal work instructions. This role directs daily workflow, assigns tasks to packaging personnel, trains new and temporary employees, and ensures full compliance with quality, documentation, safety, and ITAR standards. The Lead works closely with shipping, materials, and production teams to maintain efficient throughput and support on-time deliveries.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Training

• Oversee daily packaging operations by assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring productivity.

• Train new and temporary employees on packaging procedures, equipment use, safety compliance, and quality standards.

• Provide the Shipping Manager with feedback regarding employee performance, skill development, and training needs.

Packaging, Shipping & Workflow Execution

• Use JobBOSS ERP to verify inventory availability, job traveler details, and packaging specifications.

• Package products in boxes or on pallets in accordance with work instructions, customer requirements, and preservation standards.

• Verify part counts and finished goods quantities before packaging or releasing items for shipment; ensure accurate data entry in JobBOSS and report discrepancies.

• Confirm that all packaging meets internal, customer, and regulatory requirements.

• Prepare staging areas for outgoing shipments and coordinate with the Shipping Clerk for documentation and carrier scheduling.

• Assist with shipping tasks such as weighing, labeling, loading, and verifying shipments.

Quality, Compliance & Process Control

• Ensure that all packaging activities comply with organizational quality systems, including AS9100 and internal work instructions.

• Identify issues related to packaging equipment, materials, or processes and notify the Shipping Manager promptly.

• Maintain required documentation and records of packaging activities.

• Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for enhancing packaging materials, workflow efficiency, or methods.

Equipment & Material Handling

• Safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, scanners, and related equipment.

• Maintain adequate packaging supplies, track consumption, and report shortages as needed.

• Keep packaging and shipping areas organized, clean, and compliant with safety standards.

• Crane operation experience is a plus.

Cross-Departmental Support

• Communicate effectively with production, materials, and quality teams to support timely order fulfillment.

• Perform Shipping Operator duties as needed to meet workload and scheduling requirements.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work independently and within a team.

• Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to read and understand written instructions and simple correspondence.

• English required; Spanish a plus.

• Must be a U.S. Person (per ITAR requirements).

Knowledge & Skills

• Solid understanding of job travelers, work instructions, and packaging specifications.

• Proficiency with JobBOSS ERP for inventory verification, transactions, and documentation.

• High accuracy in counting and verifying part quantities and finished goods.

• Demonstrated leadership abilities, including coaching and mentoring team members.

• Knowledge of labeling, inventory identification, material flow, and product preservation.

• Forklift and pallet jack experience required.

• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to quality standards.

• Ability to maintain organized work processes and follow written and verbal instructions.
