Senior Platform Engineer (Python-Focused)

Location: Chicagoland area (Hybrid – 3 days onsite weekly)

Compensation: $170000 – $190000 / Year base + bonus

Employment Type: Full-Time | Exempt

We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to join a growing enterprise technology organization undergoing significant platform modernization. This role is designed for a seasoned DevOps professional who has evolved into a solution builder—someone who enjoys designing, scripting, and engineering scalable platform solutions rather than solely maintaining uptime.

This position sits within a mature Platform Engineering function and plays a key role in driving automation, innovation, and internal developer enablement across a complex application ecosystem. You’ll partner closely with development, architecture, and operations teams to create secure, scalable, and highly automated platforms that accelerate delivery and improve reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, design, and implement cloud-native platform solutions using infrastructure-as-code and automation best practices
• Build and enhance CI/CD pipelines and developer self-service platforms
• Develop abstraction layers, tooling, and APIs to reduce platform complexity for engineering teams
• Engineer and maintain containerized environments using Kubernetes and Docker
• Implement security, compliance, and monitoring controls through automation
• Collaborate cross-functionally to understand developer workflows and translate them into platform capabilities
• Design and maintain monitoring, logging, and observability solutions
• Document platform architectures, standards, and operational best practices
• Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies to improve platform performance and developer experience
• Participate in incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
• Contribute to platform strategy, roadmap planning, and long-term technical direction
• Mentor and coach junior engineers while supporting team delivery and project execution

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline
• 7+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps, or Software Engineering
• Strong hands-on experience building DevOps or platform solutions using Python (or Go/Bash)
• Expertise with cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure)
• Proficiency with Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins, Ansible
• Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and developer platform concepts
• Solid grasp of security, compliance, and reliability best practices
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, can-do mindset
• Stable employment history (no consulting profiles or frequent job changes)

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in platform or DevOps engineering
• Experience with large-scale, enterprise environments
• Exposure to platform engineering frameworks or internal developer portals
• Familiarity with service mesh technologies or advanced cloud-native security tooling
• Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives
• Interest in AI/ML operations, MLOps, or advanced automation strategies
