Small Engine Mechanic
A small engine mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, adjusting, repairing, or overhauling small engines that power outdoor power equipment, such as lawnmowers, compact tractors and related motorized equipment. They work on two- and four-stroke gasoline and diesel engines, performing both routine maintenance and complex repairs to ensure equipment operates efficiently and safely.
Core Responsibilities and Duties
- Diagnostics and Repair: Troubleshoot engine performance problems using diagnostic instruments (e.g., voltmeters, compression gauges) to locate broken or worn parts.
- Engine Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, spark plug replacements, air filter changes, and carburetor cleaning.
- Component Replacement: Repair or replace defective parts such as magnetos, water pumps, gears, pistons, and carburetors using hand tools.
- Equipment Assembly: Dismantle, clean, and reassemble engines after repair or maintenance work.
- Customer Service: Discuss equipment issues with customers, provide repair estimates, and advise on proper maintenance.
- Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of repairs, time spent, and parts used.
- Safety Adherence: Operate within safety regulations, ensuring equipment is in safe working order.
