Pharmacy Technician Lead

General Summary:
Assist clinical pharmacists in the day-to-day operations of the department. Coordinates the work activities and training of pharmacy technicians and assists in their performance appraisals. Takes on and maintains responsibility for special projects under guidance of the Pharmacy Manager responsible for the area.
Actively supports the hospital's and department's continuous quality improvement and customer service goals individually and as an effective team member.
One Pharmacy Technician, Lead will be assigned to the following areas: 1) Main Pharmacy; 2) Cleanroom; 3) Hematology/ Oncology; 4) Critical Care 5) Storeroom.
Essential Job Functions:
- Evaluates and reports new technician performance to the Pharmacy Managers in a timely.
- Provides in-services and/or continuing education (C.E.) programs to other pharmacy technicians.
- Serves as a go-to person for other pharmacy technicians as experts in his/her respective area of responsibility.
- Takes on and maintains responsibility for special projects after discussing with the pharmacy manager responsible for the area.
- Prepares labels manually or by computer for oral doses, injectables and large volume parenteral when necessary.
- Selects, prepares and/or compounds non-intravenous and intravenous medications for new medication orders, unit‑dose carts and outpatient prescriptions when applicable. Prepares cytotoxic agents when necessary.
- Fills, exchanges and credits unit-dose carts upon authorization of a pharmacist. Notifies pharmacists of returned doses. Returns usable stock to inventory.
- Fills automated dispensing machines in patient care areas to maintain adequate supplies. Fills pharmacy code trays, seizure kits, and other stock items as necessary for both inpatient and outpatient areas.
- Maintains the physical appearance of the department.
- Triages telephone calls and electronic pharmacy information system messages. Effectively communicates messages to co-workers.
- Participates in peer evaluation and evaluation of other pharmacy employees.
- Adheres to all hospital, departmental and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Coordinates the inventory and ordering of stock medications for his/her area of responsibility. Stocks shelves and notes low stock items on stock reorder forms. Assesses inventory on a yearly basis and adjusts par levels as necessary.
- Coordinates the quality assurance activities of the pharmacy to ensure that medications are stored properly and are in date.
- Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Education: High school diploma required or GED equivalent required. Completion of two years of college with at least one general mathematics course preferred.
- Job Related Experience: Minimum two years of hospital pharmacy technician experience required. A minimum of one year of experience at Lurie Children’s required. Must have successfully completed IV Specialist training.
- Licensure: Licensure as Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Illinois.
- Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
- Pharmacy students currently enrolled in pharmacy school (PharmD program) are excluded from certification requirements.
- Must be able to follow instructions accurately and be capable of following well organized work routine.
- Must be able to learn and master the procedures and techniques necessary to operate the unit‑dose system.
- Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to function within a team and to interact with tact and courtesy with all hospital employees and customers.
- Must complete an annual validation of aseptic techniques including handling of multiple-dispensed sterile bulk products.
- Must have good mathematical skills to perform calculations, make dilutions and maintain records.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- Must have computer data entry skills or ability to learn computer data entry.
