The Chief of the Divison of General Surgery is an administrative and managerial position with direct responsibilities to the Chair of the Department of Surgery. While functioning in this position, the Chief of the Division of General Surgery must represent the Division as a fair but strong advocate within the Departmental structure.

Examples of Duties
Administration 30%
- Provide administrative support for the Division of General Surgery and develop programs and related budgets pertaining to the Division.
- Be responsible for all Divisional fiscal matters.
- Supervise Divisional professional staff and faculty.
- Represent the Division in Departmental, School and University matters.
- Provide the point of contact between the Division and outside agencies or institutions.
- Recruit the necessary faculty and foster their development within the Division of General Surgery.
- Recruit the appropriate faculty to meet the educational needs.
- Be responsible for precise and fair faculty evaluations and make recommendations for promotion and tenure.
- Provide an environment within the Division of General Surgery for faculty development.
Teaching 10%
- Support and resource the Program Director and General Surgery Residency Program.
B. Provides performance evaluation of General Surgery Residents.
- Serve on educational committees where appropriate within the School of Medicine.
- Actively participate in all teaching activities such as student and resident core curriculum, bedside teaching, skills lab instruction, journal clubs, and conferences.
- Actively participate in resident recruitment including interviews.
Service 50%
- Participate in programs designed to provide better care for patients in central and southern Illinois, as they relate to the area of General Surgery.
- Set an example of highly skilled and conscientious practice in general surgery that is balanced with self-education and other academic activities as an example to future practitioners in General Surgery.
- Maintain a practice in order to maintain clinical proficiency.
- Provide a role model as practitioner for faculty, house staff, students and fellow practitioners.
- Participate in peer review for assessing clinical practice for faculty within the Division.
- Represent the Division of General Surgery in regional, state and national matters pertaining to the field of General Surgery.
- Attend national meetings, symposia, etc., in General Surgery and related fields for the purpose of contribution, gaining of further knowledge and as an example to other physicians.
- Present papers at meetings of General Surgery and other related fields.
- Serve on committees in national, regional and state societies pertaining to general surgery.
- Represent the Department of Surgery or the Division of General Surgery or both on committees as requested by the Chair of the Department.
Research 10%
- Foster research and scholarly activities within the Division.
- Be responsible for the type and quality of research within the Division.
- Seek and maintain extramural funds for research.
- Provide a role model as an investigator.
- Oversee the operation of the General Surgery Research Laboratories.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
- Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in General Surgery.
- MD licensure in the State of Illinois.
Supplemental Information
The budgeted annual salary range is $450,000 to $495,000, representing the academic base salary only, which is funded through the University. The final academic base salary will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget considerations. Additional clinical compensation will be provided separately through a member practice agreement .
