Description:
The City of Chicago’s Department of Technology & Innovation is hiring a Web Developer to support the design, development, and long-term maintenance of web-based systems used across city departments and public services. This position sits within the Engineering Information Technology division and focuses on building reliable, secure, and accessible digital applications that serve both internal operations and residents of Chicago.

In this role, you will be responsible for transforming business requirements into fully functional web solutions, ensuring that systems are scalable, efficient, and compliant with government standards. You will participate in the full software development lifecycle, including planning, coding, testing, deployment, and ongoing system improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collect and interpret functional requirements to define scope for web application projects
• Design system architecture and develop complex web-based applications for city services
• Build, test, deploy, and support production-ready software solutions
• Maintain and enhance existing applications, databases, and system components
• Identify and resolve technical issues, bugs, and performance concerns
• Ensure applications meet security standards, reliability expectations, and usability goals
• Conduct system testing and validate software against defined requirements
• Create technical documentation including system designs, specifications, and test plans
• Recommend improvements, upgrades, and modernization strategies for existing systems
• Ensure all digital solutions comply with accessibility standards such as WCAG

Minimum Requirements:

• At least three (3) years of professional experience in computer systems development, including one (1) year working on public-facing web applications
  OR
• Associate degree or higher with at least one (1) year of experience in systems development and one (1) year in public-facing web application development

Preferred Skills:

• Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle
• Strong background in web application development and system design
• Familiarity with enterprise-level software development practices
• Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles
• Ability to work on large-scale, high-impact government technology systems

Work Schedule & Environment:

• Monday through Friday schedule, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• Office-based role located at City of Chicago facilities
• Collaborative government IT environment with structured processes
• Work involves supporting critical public-facing digital infrastructure

This position is part of the City’s Career Service system and follows applicable municipal employment rules and collective bargaining agreements.
