Section Manager, Urban Mobility
What We're Looking For
We are seeking an experienced team leader to help us continue to expand our growing urban mobility practice in Chicago and nationwide. We're seeking an individual well-versed in a range of urban planning services, including but not limited to pedestrian and bicycle planning, safety programs (e.g., Vision Zero, shared streets, etc.), Complete Streets design, emerging mobility and shared-use mobility planning and design, policy planning, area-wide and corridor planning, parking and curbside management, and equitable policies, performance planning and engagement practices.
For this role, we are looking for a practice-builder with business development experience, strong client relationships, and a strategic and growth-oriented mindset. Supervisory experience is a plus, as this individual will directly oversee the work and professional development of a team of planners and engineers.
This opportunity entails being responsible for leading a professional section in the design, development, and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. This position coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. Responsible for technical coaching and mentoring, and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.
What You’ll Do:
Responsible for the development, monitoring, and management of the section's operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates.
Responsible for the management, growth, and professional development of discipline-specific planning section. Coordinates section activities, establishes priorities, and staff to jobs. Ensures staff development, mentoring, and training needs are being met. Collaborates with other Sections and Departments within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.
Supports the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and SSA process on project pursuits in the Section and office, including development of Section-level strategic planning strategies.
Supports the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the Section.
Supports the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.
Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities.
Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction.
Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of section staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
Project Delivery - Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
Leads a team including the direct and indirect supervision of at least 5 but typically 7 - 10 or more employees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need:
- Bachelor's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field and 8 years relevant experience including 2 years of project leadership experience
What We Prefer:
Master’s Degree in Planning, Urban Design, Engineering, or Landscape Architecture, or related field
American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP), Professional Engineer (PE), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP), Registered Landscape Architect (RLA), Registered Architect (RA), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP)
10 years of relevant experience
2 years supervisory experience

The approximate pay range for Illinois is $136,239.94 - $213,093.23. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
