Public Works Maintenance Worker

Position Summary

The Village of Sleepy Hollow is seeking a motivated, dependable individual to join our Public Works Department as a Maintenance Worker. This position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of Village infrastructure, including streets, water distribution, stormwater systems, parks, and municipal facilities.

This is a hands-on position in a small municipal team where employees play a critical role in maintaining essential public services.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Repair and maintain water mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines
• Service and repair sewer lift stations
• Assist with water main breaks and emergency repairs
• Street maintenance including patching, crack sealing, and snow/ice control
• Operate light and heavy equipment (dump trucks, backhoes, plows, etc.)
• Maintain storm sewer systems and drainage structures
• Perform park and facility maintenance
• Read water meters and assist with utility-related tasks
• Respond to after-hours emergencies as part of an on-call rotation
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid Illinois Driver’s License (CDL Class B preferred)
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor in various weather conditions
• Basic mechanical aptitude and equipment operation skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in municipal public works or related field
• Illinois EPA Water Operator License class D (or ability to obtain)
• Snowplow experience
• Knowledge of water distribution systems

Work Schedule

Typical schedule is Monday–Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Must be available for overtime, snow operations, and emergency call-outs.
