Controller

The Diocese of Belleville is seeking to hire a Controller. The Controller undertakes all aspects of financial management, including accounting, tax filing, and regulatory and financial reporting and auditing, budget and forecast preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of accounting functions (multi-entity environment), internal controls, financial reporting and analysis, yearly external audits, and staff management. Coordinates the preparation of regulatory reporting and ensures quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.

2. Oversees preparation and monitoring of annual financial budgets through collaboration with department leaders.

3. Provides analysis and decision support to other offices (e.g. employee benefits / insurance).

4. Responsible for financial oversight of priest retirement fund and diocesan high school accounting.

5. Oversees diocesan computer network in conjunction with outsourced IT firm and provides first level of IT support. Manages the accounting, fundraising database, e-mail functions and acts as the administrator for cloud-based applications.

6. Resource and liaison to parish, school and agencies for accounting support.

7. Directly supervises an accounting team of three staff members.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Reports to and collaborates closely with the CFO on all aspects of financial management.
• Regular interaction with the bishop and other senior diocesan leaders.
• Work is performed in an office setting with extensive close computer work required.
• Modifications to the regular work schedule may be necessary to attend occasional evening meetings and/or events at the Chancery or other diocesan locations.
• Willingness to travel, from time to time.
• Office located in Belleville, Illinois near Cathedral of St. Peter.
• Regular Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday: 8:00 – 4:30 p.m.; Friday: 8 -12 p.m.

SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS:

• Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and internal control procedures.
• Experienced with general ledger functions in a multi-entity, non-profit environment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Effective communication skills, both verbal (including presentations) and written.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated decision-making ability, discretion, and confidentiality.
• Capable of independent judgment and action, and able to handle multiple projects and priorities.
• Intermediate to advanced experience with computer networks, hardware, and software.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced degree in accounting
• Five years’ experience as a Controller or a combination of Controller and public accounting
• CPA or CMA preferred
• Past supervisory experience
• Experience with Sage Intacct or similar cloud-based accounting software is a plus
