Job Description

As a Lead Software Engineer, AI Agents, you will contribute significantly to the agility and productivity of our IT organization by building AI agents that challenge the boundaries of traditional computing capabilities. Your work will be crucial in enabling our IT organization (Business Technology Solutions) to fulfill its mission of using technology to propel AbbVie to the forefront of our industry.

This role reports on the Digital Experience and Innovation group within the Business Technology Solutions department. We set the vision for our digital employee experience and work closely with other groups to bring that experience to life.

This role is on site in Lake County, IL; we’re flexible and work from home ~2 days/week.

Responsibilities

• Deliver clean, scalable, well-optimized Python code

• Implement agentic workflows, from scratch where necessary

• Support multiple projects and advocate for optimal solutions

• Learn new skills and approach problems creatively

• Work within constraints, including cost and security

• Conceive, design, engineer, and implement software and technology solutions by studying information needs, conferring with users, investigating problem areas, and studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes

• Resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise.

• Offer technical guidance and support to the development team, ensuring best practices are followed and resolving complex technical issues.

• Ensure code quality, maintainability, and adherence to coding standards through thorough code reviews and quality assurance plans.

• Manage the Software Development Lifecycle and required documentation, serving as a System Owner

• Track project milestones and major deliverables, ensuring timely completion of the project according to its scope and goals

• Highly autonomous and productive in performing activities, requiring only minimal direction from or interaction with supervisor. Keeps key stakeholders informed through effective verbal and written communication.

• Matures and leverages relationships with affiliates, subsidiaries, vendors, and industry peers in accordance with Abbvie Values, Vendor Management Office, and Purchasing to further the mission, vision and goals of the organization.

• May mentor/supervise a team of one or more and guide and evaluate the performance of those individuals; is accountable for the effective performance of the team/individuals.

• Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies, including code of conduct, safety, GxP compliance, data security, and the software development lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree with 7 years experience; Master's Degree with 6 years experience; PhD with 2 years experience.

• Experience in the pharmaceutical industry preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver working software and maintain that software over time in a production environment.

• Demonstrated proficiency across a wide range of technologies and platforms related to software design and development, programming languages, data integration, data warehousing, data analysis and visualization tools, data storage, network connectivity, and virtualization/cloud environments.

• Excellent written and oral English communication skills.

• Experience with a variety of programming languages, cloud technologies, and frameworks, with demonstrated ability to learn new and evolving technologies. Python and AWS experience required.
