Job Listing: Porters & Stewards - Shedd Aquarium

Job Overview :

Porters and Stewards play an essential role in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of Shedd Aquarium's restaurant and concession spaces. As a Porter/Steward, you will support the culinary and retail teams by ensuring all areas, including kitchens, dining areas, and storage spaces, remain clean, safe, and well-organized. Your commitment to cleanliness and attention to detail will help create an exceptional dining experience for our guests, contributing to Shedd Aquarium's mission to provide a welcoming and memorable environment. The Porter/Steward will maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen and dining areas by performing tasks such as dishwashing, equipment cleaning, trash disposal, and food storage organization. You will support the kitchen team by keeping workspaces free from clutter, properly handling dishware and utensils, and ensuring compliance with Sodexo Live!'s health and safety standards. This role requires teamwork, efficiency, and a strong commitment to cleanliness and organization in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Cleaning & Sanitation: Wash and sanitize dishes, cookware, utensils, and other kitchen equipment following established procedures. Maintain clean and organized dining and preparation areas in compliance with health and safety guidelines.
• Organization & Inventory: Assist in the storage and organization of food items, supplies, and equipment. Ensure items are properly labeled and stored in designated areas, rotating stock as needed.
• Waste Management: Properly dispose of trash and recyclables in designated areas and ensure bins are emptied regularly to maintain a clean environment.
• Equipment Maintenance: Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and functionality of dishwashing machines, sinks, and other kitchen equipment. Report any malfunctions to the supervisor.
• Support for Overall Team: Assist chefs and kitchen staff by ensuring they have access to clean dishware, utensils, and workstations, allowing them to focus on food preparation and guest service.
• Communication & Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, supporting colleagues and maintaining a positive work environment.
• Cleanliness & Sanitation: Maintain cleanliness in food prep areas and adhere to all food safety and sanitation standards, ensuring a safe environment for both guests and team members.
• Problem Solving & Memorable Experiences: Act as a passionate problem solver and memory maker, going the extra mile to create a warm, welcoming experience for every guest, whether local or visiting.

Key Attributes & Qualifications :

• Experience: Previous experience in a kitchen, food service, or cleaning role is preferred but not required.
• Attention to Detail: Strong focus on cleanliness, organization, and safety standards.
• Professional & Friendly Demeanor: You project a positive and approachable attitude that enhances each guest interaction, creating meaningful connections with visitors of all backgrounds.
• Can-Do Spirit: Eager to provide exceptional service, you go above and beyond to ensure a memorable experience for each guest, demonstrating adaptability and attention to detail.

Other Requirements :

• Ability to work effectively in a high-activity environment with wet floors, varying temperatures, and noise.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
• Able to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) used by guests.
