Trade Justice Education Fund

Trade Justice Organizer
Midwest Region

Based in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana,
Michigan, Ohio and Western Pennsylvania

Responsible for Organizing Presentations, Public Events, Meetings and Related Activities about Trade Policy Across the Industrial Midwest

The Trade Justice Education Fund and Citizens Trade Campaign are affiliated nonprofit organizations working to expand public awareness about the economic, environmental and social consequences of decades of rigged, corporate-driven trade agreements and to promote just-and-sustainable trade alternatives that prioritize the interests of working people and communities.

With deep roots in the labor, environmental, family farm, faith and consumer movements, the organizations’ officers and directors together have decades of experience educating and mobilizing constituencies on trade justice issues such as jobs and wages, worker rights, climate change, public health, AI accountability and more.

The Trade Justice Education Fund and Citizens Trade Campaign are together seeking a full-time Trade Justice Organizer to conduct educational presentations, organize public events and lead related work across a variety of Midwestern states, including parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

Primary Responsibilities
The primary purpose of this position is to educate and mobilize grasstops leaders, grassroots activists and the public on trade policy alternatives to rigged, corporate-driven trade agreements. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Arranging invitations to present about trade issues and distribute materials at labor and civil society groups’ existing meetings and events, and scheduling and conducting a semi-regular circuit of such in-person presentations across a number of states;
  • Working with partner groups to organize additional community forums, press events, demonstrations and webinars about timely trade issues, including about ongoing trade negotiations and policy proposals;
  • Identifying, recruiting and training local spokespeople to speak about their experiences under existing trade policies to policymakers, reporters and in public events;
  • Building ad hoc volunteer groups of both grasstops leaders and local activists to jointly organize and participate in a variety of campaign tactics (including policymaker meetings, postcarding and petitioning, community forums, press events, demonstrations, etc.);
  • Participating in national coordinating meetings; helping to advise on joint campaign tactics and materials; and preparing weekly reports on your work; and
  • Supporting other tasks associated with trade education and campaigning on an as-needed basis.

Qualifications
Only highly-organized self-starters should consider applying for this position. Successful candidates will:

  • Have a deep commitment to social and economic justice generally, and a real interest in educating and mobilizing people on trade justice issues; be excited about working in a fast-paced, collaborative, mission-focused campaign environment; and have a proven track record of working well independently;
  • Have strong communication skills and be comfortable with public speaking, meeting facilitation, writing and cold calling;
  • Have at least three years organizing experience (professional or volunteer), including experience giving presentations; recruiting and working with volunteers; and organizing protests and events;
  • Be extremely detail-oriented and deadline-focused; skilled at task tracking, calendaring and planning ahead; and able to handle multiple responsibilities at one time;
  • Be able to work within a budget and to record and report on one’s work;
  • Fluency in languages besides English is a strong plus; and
  • Existing relationships with labor unions and other movement organizations in any or all of the states mentioned is also a strong plus, and is definitely something to highlight in your résumé and cover letter.

Be advised that this is an organizing position requiring frequent evening and weekend work and overnight travel.

A valid drivers’ license is very helpful.

Location & Compensation
This is a remote, full-time position paying a salary of $50,000 to $60,000/year, plus vacation, health and retirement benefits. Candidates must be based in WI, IL, IN, MI, OH or western PA.

To Apply
Please send a résumé and cover letter to [email protected] as soon as possible. We will consider résumés until the position is filled. No calls please.
