Veterinary Assistant and Technician

VETERINARY ASSISTANT/ TECHNICIAN-Full-Time or Part-time

Reports to: Clinic Manager/VSP

The Veterinary Assistant/Technician is responsible for assisting the veterinary staff with all functions related to shelter medicine, shelter surgery and staff and community veterinary services, as well as ensuring that the day-to-day tasks of the clinic are completed. The Veterinary Assistant/ Technician assists with maintaining the wellness of our shelter population and client-owned animals, ensures excellent animal care, clinic organization, cleanliness, and exceptional customer service.

Designation: Front Line Operations Ability to Work Remotely: No

Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:

-Assisting the veterinarians with diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures, administering vaccines, providing medical treatment to animals in our care, performing anesthetic induction, intubation, monitoring and recovery, and any and all other supportive functions as required by the veterinarians.

-Assisting the veterinarians with patients by using safe and humane animal restraint and handling

-Assisting with inventory of medications and clinic supplies

-Creating and maintaining complete and accurate medical records in ShelterLuv and ClinicHQ software systems. Assisting with data entry into ShelterLuv.

-Conducting daily rounds of the shelter population and communicating medical concerns to the Medical Director or veterinarian on site, ensuring medications are being given, and refilled as needed

-Following medical protocols for the diagnosis and treatment of specific common diseases in the shelter and prescribing medications as instructed in the protocols

-Weekly sorting and organizing of clinic donations and disposing of what is not needed

-Filling monthly preventative medications and administering booster vaccines for shelter-housed and fostered animals as directed by the Clinic Manager/VSP

-Monitoring requests for medication refills for shelter animals in foster care and filling and refilling medications for shelter-housed animals

-Participating in monthly community vaccine events and other shelter special events as requested

-Ensuring that the clinic is organized and cleaned daily, cages and carriers sanitized using appropriate sanitation procedures, clinic laundry done, and trash taken out.

-Assisting with daily shelter intakes, or other supportive care as needed

-Ensuring that the day flows smoothly and daily tasks are completed

-Receiving animals for exams, taking a thorough history before examinations, and then explaining findings and medications to owners and foster owners after veterinarian exams.

-Pro-actively suggesting ways to improve processes, procedures, etc.

-Providing training/guidance to volunteers and new veterinary assistants

-Participating in continuing education to better serve our population and our clients

-Conducting other tasks as needed or assigned

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

-Ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 65 pounds

-Have a high level of manual dexterity, the ability to bend and squat, and the ability to stand or

kneel for significant periods of time

-Must be able to safely and compassionately handle and work with all cats, dogs, rabbits and other domestic animals including those with medical or behavioral challenges

-Be able to maintain a positive attitude and the ability to remain calm under pressure

-Ability to work compassionately with clients and staff/volunteers in various emotional

states

-Must exhibit good critical thinking and problem-solving skills

-Exposure to disinfectant solutions, isoflurane, various medications and chemicals and zoonotic diseases

-Subject to animal bites and scratches

-Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives

available

-Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the organization. May require evening, holiday and weekend work hours
