Can you handle silly sing-alongs, messy art and science projects, and thinking on your feet? The Schaumburg Township District Library is seeking a two (2) Youth Services “Pop-Up” Interns . The Interns will gain practical, hands-on experience by providing reference and readers’ advisory at youth services desks, developing and delivering story times and youth/teen programs, creating displays, assisting with special projects, and more. Additionally, the Interns will work with a team of highly experienced, hardworking, fun, and friendly Youth Services professionals. The successful candidate will get not only a crash course in Youth Services Librarianship, but mentorship and professional contacts in their chosen field.

This is a part-time position working 30 hours a week for 10 weeks, from May 26, 2026 through August 7, 2026. The hours are as follows and require flexibility.

  • Monday-Thursday: 8:30am-3:00pm
  • Fridays: 8:30am-12:30pm

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. The pay rate for this position is $16.00/hour to $18.30/hour, based on skills and qualifications. This position is eligible for EAP and PTO.

Position Summary:

The Youth Services Pop-Up Library Intern is responsible for providing engaging hands-on experiences in a mobile version of the Library. Beyond bringing resources to the Schaumburg Township District, this position also signs patrons up for Library cards, provides opportunities to participate in the Summer Challenge program, conducts programming, and acts as a Library ambassador in the community.

Requirements & Skills for the Position:

Public Service

  • Maintain the Pop-Up Library schedule; communicate with staff at each planned site.
  • Develop and facilitate hands-on-activities to use at Pop-Up Library stops.
  • Develop and conduct weekly story times and STEM programs.
  • Ensure the Pop-Up Library is stocked each day, with a variety of reading materials for all ages and levels, appropriate for those day’s locations, and had ample supplies for planned activities.
  • Load and unload the van with materials: at each location and at the beginning and ending of each day.
  • Provide Library information and readers’ advisory services to a diverse population.
  • Distribute materials to patrons at each location and record daily circulation statistics.
  • Sign patrons up for the Summer Challenge and Library cards.
  • Compile statistics for daily, weekly, and monthly totals. Submit an end of summer narrative report.
  • Conduct patron surveys on their Pop-Up Library experience and submit a report on findings with suggestions for improvements.
  • Communicate effectively with patrons and staff at various site locations, i.e., apartment complexes, schools, park districts, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining collections, assuring that materials are in good condition and, if not, are repaired or replaced.
  • Work with all age groups effectively.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university is required.
  • Enrolled in a Masters in Library Science or similar MA program preferred.
  • Experience developing programs and services for youth preferred.
  • Working knowledge or word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required.
