Job Overview And Responsibilities

The Manager of Crew Resources Strategy & Planning supports the strategic planning function of the pilot planning business. The role will develop and maintain an evolving, integrated pilot staffing plan that the other functional areas of pilot planning execute toward. In doing so, this Manager will also drive the strategy for how United’s pilot workforce system is designed (e.g. pilot base strategies and balancing, global fleet staffing optimization for seasonality re-fleeting, etc.) and be responsible for leading cross-team collaboration within Crew Resources (Workforce Planning, Process and Execution, and Plan Production) that provides inputs relevant for the strategy creation and be responsible for the processes to drive alignment to and execution of the strategy once developed. This role will lead analysts responsible for the analysis and construction of the strategy and crew planning narratives. This function is a critical role within Flight Ops and the greater Air Operations organization, owning all aspects of planning one of United’s most critical resources – 18,000+ pilots – and the Manager will play a critical role in defining and communicating the strategy that drives the forward-looking pilot plan to senior leaders.

  • Evaluates operational and financial implications of strategic changes including, but not limited to, base footprint, pairing construction & pilot schedule strategy and objectives, reserve and Line Average optimization, and vacancy/displacement needs, identifying opportunities to optimize resources through asymmetric planning
  • Identifies, analyzes, and recommends solutions to pilot resource challenges and opportunities and develops strategies to optimize the system of crew resources balancing financial, regulatory, contractual, pilot service, and ops reliability, and other strategic factors
  • Analyzes the operational and financial implications of structural operating landscape changes being contemplated, including fleet deployment and network changes, labor contract provisions, changes to regulations, and other ad-hoc strategic projects that impact pilot staffing
  • Develop frameworks for evaluating scenario-based, “what-if” business cases to support decision making
  • Responsible for the production of analysis and presentations to deliver insights for pilot resourcing strategic decisions and close-in updates summarizing the state and outlook of the pilot resourcing function’s ability to support the network schedule and upcoming staffing decisions
  • Drive collaboration within Flight Ops and across Air Ops, Network Planning, Finance, NOC, Labor Relations the NOC
  • Manage critical Pilot Planning relationships, facilitating working-level collaboration, communication, coordination, and influence within Crew Resources, Flight Ops and across non-Flight Ops departments with whom collaboration is a success factor for the pilot plan
  • Communicates strategy through analytical presentation building, dashboard development, and analytical reporting
  • Independently is able to develop narratives and build logical sequences of data exhibits to support conclusions and recommendations


Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of relevant work experience
  • 3+ years of either: A) airline experience, majority financial and/or resource planning, or B) Professional Advisory serving airline clients with engagements across supply chain, resource planning, operational efficiency, or continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated track record of taking an anecdotal hypothesis or abstract concept and re-framing it with analytic rigor
  • Compulsive belief in establishing and communicating a plan to establish a common purpose across stakeholders whom the plan effects
  • Natural inclination to ask "why" and challenge the status quo
  • Intellectual curiosity and self-motivation to heed signals in data and want to understand root causes and glean actionable insights from that understanding
  • Experience engaging with senior leaders, leveraging emotional intelligence skills to employ and balance strong executive presence with humility
  • Self-starter, ability to handle concurrent projects and prioritize multiple competing demands, managing the matching of resources with workload, and manage up status updates without follow-up
  • Ability to develop a compelling story that delivers clear and convincing messages communicated in a logical way that is easy to follow and unambiguously answers the “so what” for the respective audience
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Mathematics, or Statistics or equivalent experience in Management Consulting or Airline Management
  • Crew Planning, Network Planning, Financial Planning & Analysis, or Strategic Planning/Corporate Development at a major global airline with multiple aircraft types and crew bases


The base pay range for this role is $99,750.00 to $129,924.00.

The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
