Director of the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic
Directs the Elmhurst University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic (SLHC) and teaches related courses. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with a balance of teaching, administrative, supervision, and service duties.
Position Status: Exempt
Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000. This is the expected salary range for this position. The actual salary offered will depend on a candidate's experience and education, and departmental budget.
Responsibilities
Administration
- Schedules the fall, spring, and summer speech clinics, including all client treatment sessions, students providing therapy, and clinical faculty supervising students. (The clinic length may increase, associated with the increased needs of the graduate students.)
- Schedules the fall, spring, and summer term clinic grading meetings.
- Ensures that all necessary clinic correspondence occurs (introductory letters to clients, client contracts, scholarship letters, invoices, purchase orders, insurance company requests, DCFS requests, etc.).
- Ensures that the SLHC is compliant with HIPAA and other regulations affecting university SLH clinics, including Medicare.
- Revises, knows, and abides by the policies and procedures of the SLHC.
- Reviews the clinic charts and final treatment reports at the end of each term.
- Trains new clinical faculty regarding their duties and responsibilities, as well as the policies and procedures of the SLHC.
- Works with the instructors of CSD 378 as they relate to student involvement in clinical practicum and progression to CSD 477 and CSD 476.
- Meets with the Department Chair and Graduate Program Director to discuss students of concern as needed.
- Assists clinical faculty with preparation and review of clinical remediation plans for students of concern.
- Manages questions and concerns about the clinic that come from students, clients and their families, the general public, and clinical faculty.
- Reviews student evaluations completed for each clinical faculty member each term, shares these with Chair, and meets with the respective clinical faculty members to discuss them.
- Organizes and monitors background checks, fingerprinting, and immunizations for the graduate student clinicians, with assistance from the Fieldwork Coordinator; monitors undergraduate clinicians related to these requirements as needed.
- Reviews and signs the final practicum hours forms when the undergraduate students complete their final semester of clinic.
- Ensures that students maintain the materials room.
- Manages the clinic budget in collaboration with the Department Chair.
- Purchases, implements, and trains clinical faculty and appropriate faculty and staff on CALIPSO.
- Updates the undergraduate and graduate clinic practicum handbooks each term with input from current clinical faculty and the Fieldwork Coordinator.
Teaching
- Teaches academic and practicum courses across fall, spring, and summer semesters in either the undergraduate or graduate programs.
- Teaches CSD 505 in the summer, CSD 500 (2 sections) in the fall and CSD 477 in the spring and fall.
Supervision
- Supervises students conducting speech-language therapy, all subject to meeting load requirements for clinical faculty as outlined in the Faculty Manual.
- Supervises graduate students conducting diagnostic evaluations in the SLHC; evaluation clients are part of the standard load for the position.
- Reviews and evaluates lesson plans and SOAP notes for each therapy session, and mid-term and final clinic reports for each client supervised.
- Mentors students during the clinical supervision experience, including weekly meetings to discuss each client and student clinician’s performance.
Service
- Attends the Council on Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders conference for professional development regularly (or appoints an attendee).
- Attends the Clinic Directors Meetings for the colleges and universities in the State of Illinois.
- Consults with the Graduate Program Director regarding ASHA paperwork for graduate students.
- Assists with the admission process for the graduate students, by reviewing applicants as requested by Graduate Program Director.
- Meets with prospective undergraduate students as needed, particularly during the summer.
- Completes an average of 10 hours of continuing education per year (to meet the requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for certification and the State of Illinois for licensure).
- Remains a certified member in good standing with ASHA.
- Maintains licensure with the State of Illinois.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology (or equivalent).
- Certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
- Illinois licensure.
- At least five (5) years of full-time clinical experience, with previous clinical supervision experience.
- Ability to work well with students, clients, and their families.
- Ability to work well as a team member with faculty and staff.
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- High degree of flexibility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. preferred.
- Clinic director experience in an accredited program.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
The essential functions of this position are primarily performed in an indoor setting with limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work is often sedentary in nature and requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods. Required abilities include speaking and hearing for in-person and virtual communication, using close and distance vision when reading documents or viewing screens, and performing tasks with repetitive fine motor skills. Work may require occasional lifting, bending, carrying, or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds.
