Position Overview


This position assists the Geologic and Waste Assessment Unit in providing expertise for transportation and capital improvement projects throughout the state and conducting regulated substance assessments and investigations for potential soil and groundwater and other types of contamination issues as requested by other department offices. This position assists the Geologic and Waste Assessment Unit with special environmentalrelated tasks and provides support and technical services as necessary and requested.

Essential Functions

  • Reviews content and completeness of Environmental Survey Requests (ESRs), ensures adequacy of the survey task orders, and coordinates and tracks flow of information with the scientific surveys.
  • Populates and monitors the databases, web applications, and tracking tools such as the Transportation Review for Environmental Compliance (TREC) and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Site Assessment Tracking System (ISATS), and maintains documents, geographic information system (GIS) layers, and tracking tools for monitoring the status of work.
  • Assists the Geologic and Waste Assessment Unit staff with reviewing and processing various environmental documents for technical and administrative sufficiency.
  • Ensures that periodic regulated substances technical guidance is shared in a timely manner for review and approval, transmits reports, authorization, and other notifications to department staff, consultants, and outside agencies.
  • Prepares status reports measuring the accomplishments and efficiency of the Phase I through Phase IV regulated substances programs.
  • Generates, tracks, and maintains records according to the Geologic and Waste Assessment Unit’s procedures and with the applicable departmental records retention schedule.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, geophysics, geoscience, geomorphology, environmental geology, geological engineering, earth science, soil science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the basic principles of geology and the potential for soil and groundwater contamination.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite such as Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and strong presentation skills.
