Citizenship Class Program Specialist

Erie Neighborhood House, a progressive social service agency serving the Chicago metropolitan area and dedicated to promoting a just and inclusive society, is seeking a full-time (40 hours) Citizenship class Specialist for its Little Village /West Town Sites; (40 hours - 16 hours of teaching responsibility and 24 hours of admin responsibility).

Reporting to the Adult Education Program Manager, the Program Specialist’s basic function is to develop the Citizenship Class curriculum, teach Civic/Citizenship classes for adult learners, and provide administrative and program support to staff, instructors, and participants in Erie Neighborhood House’s Civic/Citizenship classes.

The full-time Citizenship Class Program Specialist will be a position in partnership with the Department of Adult Education and Training, directly impacting the immigrant community.

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Recruit and register students for Civic and Citizenship classes and create and maintain student files.
  • Administer and score the standardized pre- and post-tests.
  • Provide instruction in English to develop the oral and literacy competencies required to pass the U.S. citizenship exam and interview.
  • Develop, maintain, and submit curricula and class resources, including lesson plans with student objectives and activities.
  • Prepare and present English language and naturalization curricula and materials to program participants.
  • Engage students and encourage class participation, incorporating technology into classroom activities.
  • Assess and track student progress by ensuring that all students complete an individualized education plan and identify and address individual challenges.
  • Keep accurate attendance records.
  • Follow up with students with poor attendance on a weekly basis.
  • Manage the waitlist for Civic/Citizenship classes to ensure maximum enrollment.
  • Support and ensure professional classroom instruction of the citizenship instructors; Ensure that syllabi are created and uploaded to SharePoint.
  • Collect, enter, and track statistical data on student enrollment, attendance, test scores, goals, and outcomes in database.
  • Prepare and submit reports and vouchers for funders, as well as internal and external stakeholders.
  • Administer student evaluations of the instructor once a semester.
  • Document, track, and submit the instructor’s professional development hours to the funder.
  • Conduct outreach for citizenship and ESL classes.
  • Support citizenship instruction and outcomes by coordinating and scheduling classes on and off-site.
  • Identify students who need additional support and link them with appropriate resources.
  • Participate in meetings with staff and instructors, partner agency meetings, and professional development trainings.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary.

Travel: occasional travels for outreach activities, training, and program registration events.'

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required, and a minimum of two years experience working with ESL students is preferred.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of adult learners, collaborate with the teaching team and volunteer tutors, and perform program administrative duties.
  • Bilingual – Spanish and English preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the curriculum development and general education principles of instruction and classroom management.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret student test scores (CASAS) and reports.
  • Ability to develop individual and classroom learning objectives and assess students’ progress towards them.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, on-line systems and other software.
