The Optometric Technician is an unlicensed health professional who supports optometrists, physicians, and nurses by assisting with patient screening, diagnostic testing, and exams. The role also involves maintaining patient care supplies, ensuring efficient patient flow, and providing educational instructions to optometry patients. Strong customer service skills, compassion, and professionalism are essential in interactions with patients and team members.

Qualifications

  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days — American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Education: High School Diploma

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and verify medical information relevant to the eye exam requested by the doctor.
  • Complete initial patient screening.
  • Document pertinent patient information in the EMR.
  • Maintain the patient care environment and supplies to ensure privacy and safety.
  • Perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing using appropriate equipment and methods.
  • Educate patients on proper wear and care of contact lenses.
  • Perform basic work‑ups for all visit types, including updating and verifying required patient information in EPIC (HPI, ROS, Medications, Allergies, Social History, Family History, Medical Eye History).
  • Conduct testing such as Farnsworth/Ishihara color testing, stereopsis, Amsler grid, vision therapy, and lens analysis.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment including Pentacam, OCT, visual field (VF), glare testing devices, auto‑refractor, handheld AR, AccuPen/Tono‑Pen, pachymeter, and Pentacam.
  • Perform pupil checks and dilation, including use of a transilluminator, AccuPen/Tono‑Pen for eye pressure, and proper instillation of drops.
  • Provide patient education on insertion, removal, care, and handling of all types of contact lenses.
  • Complete required continuing education, including BLS certification and medical terminology training.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $19.03per hour - $30.83per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
