Lung Transplant Program Lead
Job Description
Job Description
The Allman Institute is a translational research organization applying personalized medicine to treat severe and historically difficult-to-treat diseases, beginning with pulmonary fibrosis and chronic lung transplant dysfunction. The Institute combines deep molecular profiling, longitudinal clinical data, and a pragmatic mix of mechanism-guided and large-scale empirical approaches to accelerate therapeutic discovery and translation.
We pursue an ambitious and pragmatic, modality-agnostic therapeutic strategy spanning genetic medicines, molecular and pharmacologic therapies, cell and immune-based interventions, and engineered biological systems, in close collaboration with leading academic and biotech partners across the U.S. and abroad. The Institute is established as a nonprofit, backed by substantial long-term capital committed directly to the mission. Where strategically valuable, we may pursue mission-aligned for-profit ventures, spin-outs, and partnerships to accelerate therapeutic development and patient impact.
We are a small but rapidly growing team of approximately 20, scaling to 40–50 over the next year across labs and offices in Redwood City, CA and Cambridge, MA, driven by scientific rigor, translational urgency, and a patient-anchored mandate.
We are seeking a Lung Transplant Program Lead to lead project management and scientific coordination of the Institute's lung transplantation workstream. This role will serve as the dedicated owner of an effort that is currently early in its development, bringing structure, momentum, and synthesis to research and clinical activities that span multiple internal teams and external collaborators. The Program Lead will work closely with Institute leadership and serve as a primary point of contact for clinical and transplant teams.
ResponsibilitiesProgram Management and Coordination
- Serve as the dedicated project manager for the Institute's lung transplant program, owning timelines, deliverables, and follow-through across research and clinical activities.
- Maintain a comprehensive working record of clinical sites, transplant programs, investigators, and collaborators the Institute has engaged with, ensuring continuity and momentum across conversations.
- Drive coordination across internal scientific, clinical, and operational teams to ensure transplant-related activities progress on schedule.
- Manage multiple workstreams simultaneously in a dynamic, fast-moving environment.
Scientific Synthesis and Information Management
- Synthesize information across research findings, clinical data, literature, and collaborator input into clear, actionable summaries for Institute leadership.
- Track emerging scientific and clinical developments in transplant immunology and lung transplantation relevant to Institute programs.
- Prepare briefings, summaries, and reports that translate scientific and clinical complexity into decisions and next steps.
- Serve as a direct point of contact for clinical teams, transplant programs, and external collaborators engaged with the Institute.
- Communicate fluently with clinicians, clinician-scientists, academic and bench researchers, diagnostic and clinical lab personnel, clinical coordinators, nurses, and schedulers.
- Coordinate with transplant-related advisors and collaborators to advance both clinical optimization and experimental research efforts.
- Support the dual mandate of the program: hyper-optimizing clinical lung transplant outcomes for individual patients, and enabling new research approaches and their implementation in transplant immunology.
- Help identify and operationalize innovative approaches emerging from the Institute's research and external collaborations.
- Bridge the gap between bench-side research and clinical translation, ensuring scientific insights are positioned to inform real-world transplant care.
Required
- PhD in immunology or a closely related discipline, or Master's degree in immunology with equivalent academic or work experience. Transplant immunology background preferred; general immunology training acceptable.
- Five or more years of experience in an academic research setting.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications in immunology, demonstrating the ability to synthesize complex information and communicate it clearly.
- Experience working in a laboratory research environment, with a demonstrated ability to network and collaborate across disciplines.
- Strong project and program management skill set, with the ability to drive multiple workstreams and stakeholders forward in parallel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with comfort speaking to all levels of a research-driven organization.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Preferred
- Specific background in transplant immunology or transplantation as a therapeutic area.
- Time spent in industry, in addition to academic research experience.
- Data analysis or bioinformatics skills.
- Existing relationships with transplant programs, transplant immunologists, or pulmonary research groups.
- Familiarity with clinical research operations or translational research environments.
This position may be remote, hybrid, or on-site depending on candidate location and Institute needs. Candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Boston/Cambridge area are of particular interest, though strong candidates in other U.S. locations will also be considered. Some travel to clinical sites, collaborator institutions, and Institute locations may be required.
About the RoleThis role is well suited to someone who combines scientific fluency in immunology with strong project management instincts and a collaborative orientation. The Lung Transplant Program Lead is expected to enable communication and coordination between researchers, clinicians, and operational teams and bring together an ambitious program. and helping the Institute deliver on a dual mandate of optimizing clinical transplant outcomes and enabling novel research approaches in transplant immunology.
