Steel Yard Materials Technician (Overhead Crane)

Location: Minooka, IL

Compensation: $20.00/hour during assignment; $25+ per hour once hired on by the client

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:00am–2:00pm

Overtime: May be required; when scheduled, hours run 5:00am–3:00pm

A day in the life

At 6:00am in Minooka, you’ll sign in on a manual time sheet and join a tight-knit crew supporting steel production. Your morning starts with staging materials, placing protective cardboard corners on steel bundles, and banding them so they ship safely. As the day unfolds, you’ll guide and operate an overhead crane, help lift materials (up to 50 lbs, including pallets and rolls of paper), and keep the work area orderly and hazard-free. You’ll rarely touch a sit-down forklift (less than 10% of your day), and you’ll stay geared up with a provided hard hat, safety glasses, and high-visibility vest.

What this role is (and isn’t)

This is not a typical warehouse job. It’s hands-on, repetitive, and physically demanding work that directly supports steel operations. If you’re safety-focused, detail-minded, and ready to move with purpose, this environment will feel like the right fit.

Demonstrate reliability and attention to safety in general labor, and you may be trained on overhead crane operations. Your path starts with fundamentals, and can progress to advanced handling with the same small, collaborative team.

Core responsibilities

• Apply protective cardboard corners to steel bundles
• Band and secure steel for outbound shipment
• Operate an overhead crane safely and efficiently
• Lift up to 50 lbs (pallets, rolls of paper, etc.)
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
• Record time via manual sign-in/sign-out sheet

Additional details

• Training on overhead crane possible after proving yourself in general labor
• Sit-down forklift used very sparingly (under 10% of the time)
• PPE provided: hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest

What you’ll bring

• High school diploma or GED (required)
• Stamina for physically demanding, repetitive tasks
• Strong commitment to safety and careful attention to detail
• No prior experience required; however, you should be clear this is not a light-duty warehouse job
