DETENTION COOK PART TIME

The Cook Part-Time shall be familiar with and adhere to the philosophy and all policies and procedures as established by the Madison County Probation & Court Services Department. All work must be treated as confidential.

The Cook Part-Time, under the direction of the Cook, will perform activities to include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Shares the responsibility for the operation of the Detention Home food service during designated hours.
  • Implements those Detention Home policies and procedures as they pertain to the food service operation.
  • Performs all duties in a manner that guarantees the security and safety of residents in detention.
  • Follows the guidelines for food preparation and service, standards of cleanliness and sanitation, record keeping, and for other duties for which guidelines are established.
  • Prepares and serves meals and snacks at designated times.
  • Maintains equipment and work areas in a clean and sanitary state, and ensures that food storage, handling, and service practices offer protection against disease and pests.
  • Assists other staff in the supervision of residents during meals, and at other times, as needed.
  • Supervises PSE works or residents assigned to food service duties.
  • Assists in implementing vocational and behavioral programs for residents.
  • Attends and participates in all staffings, staff meeting, and/or training programs as assigned by the superintendent.
  • Demonstrates support for his/her fellow employees in the course of the performance of his/her job.
  • Performs such other duties as assigned by the Director of Probation and Court Services or other designated managers.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or its equivalent is preferred.

A minimum of two years of food service employment are required. Employment experience must reflect a progressive ability to assume responsibility for food preparation, service, cleaning and other aspects of food service operations. In addition, the position requires competence in commercial food service practices, since the cook will participate in supervising and training residents in vocational skills. Food service experience in the context of a correctional or residential social service facility is preferred. Shall possess a current Illinois Public Health Department Permit.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Due to department structure and programming, individual must maintain flexibility in assignment location and scheduled hours of work.

Ability to get along with and interact with adult and juvenile probationers, work well on his/her own without supervision but also have the ability to take direction or supervision and work well as part of a team.

Must be a citizen of the United States. Must be a resident of the county, probation district or circuit in which he/she is employed. Must be generally qualified as provided by law or rule of court.

Must have devotion to principles of public service, capacity to learn by experience, fundamental capacity for and interest in the welfare of human beings, good character and balanced personality, ability to work with others, and the possession or ability to obtain a valid Illinois Drivers License.

Hours of work: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Predominately weekends, county designated holidays, and coverage for full-time cook leave time.
