About the WIC Program

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is a federally funded nutrition and health program that supports pregnant women, postpartum women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children up to age five.

WIC helps families access:

  • Healthy foods and nutrition support
  • Breastfeeding education and resources
  • Health screenings and wellness guidance
  • Community and medical referrals

The program is designed to improve health outcomes and provide early nutritional support during critical stages of growth and development.

Position Summary

The WIC Nutrition Specialist (CPA) plays an important role in supporting women, infants, and families through nutrition education, counseling, breastfeeding support, and community resource coordination.

This role works directly with participants to complete WIC certifications, determine eligibility, conduct nutrition assessments, prescribe food packages, and provide individualized nutrition guidance. The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, community-focused, and passionate about improving maternal and child health outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with backgrounds in nutrition, nursing, public health, maternal-child health, or community health who enjoy making a meaningful impact through direct client support and education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete WIC certifications in accordance with federal, state, and agency guidelines
  • Determine participant eligibility for WIC services
  • Conduct nutrition assessments and identify nutrition risks
  • Develop individualized nutrition care plans based on participant needs
  • Provide client-centered nutrition counseling and breastfeeding education
  • Prescribe WIC-approved food packages and explain program benefits
  • Document assessments, referrals, follow-ups, and required participant records
  • Schedule nutrition education follow-up appointments
  • Connect participants with medical, social service, and community resources
  • Facilitate or assist with nutrition education classes and group sessions
  • Use WIC systems for certification, scheduling, documentation, and reporting
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and participant confidentiality
  • Participate in staff meetings, peer reviews, chart audits, and trainings
  • Support a positive, welcoming, and professional environment for participants and families
QualificationsEducation & Experience

Candidates must meet WIC requirements for a Competent Professional Authority (CPA). Qualified backgrounds may include:

  • Registered Dietitian
  • Registered Dietetic Technician
  • Nutritionist
  • Registered Nurse
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition, Health, Public Health, Home Economics, or a related field with nutrition coursework

Experience or coursework in the following areas is preferred:

  • Maternal and child nutrition
  • Lactation and breastfeeding support
  • Nutrition assessment
  • Nutrition education and counseling
Additional Qualifications
  • Bilingual skills preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Customer service and community engagement experience preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources helpful
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Valid driver’s license, clear driving record, and current auto insurance required
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends based on program needs

Compensation & Benefits

Rate of Pay: $20.84/hour
