Infrastructure Administrator I

HR Green
Mchenry, IL

Job Description

Job Description

What if the work you did every day kept an entire engineering firm running?

At HR Green, our IT team is the backbone of everything we do. From the engineers designing bridges to the planners shaping communities, they all depend on reliable infrastructure to do their best work. That's where you come in.

We're looking for an Infrastructure Administrator I to join our IT team and grow into a critical role supporting our enterprise environment. This is a hands-on, learn-by-doing position, and it's built for someone who's ready to dig in, ask good questions, and take real ownership over time.

Why this role is worth your attention

This isn't a helpdesk job with a fancy title. You'll be working across a broad, enterprise-grade infrastructure stack, covering everything from networking and servers to cloud platforms and security. You'll start by learning the environment, then take on real responsibilities, and over time, own critical systems yourself.

What you'll be doing

You'll work across a wide range of infrastructure areas, including:

  • LAN/WAN networking, routers, switches, and UPS devices
  • Windows and ESX server environments, including email, Active Directory, file, and print servers
  • Citrix XenDesktop and VMware virtualization platforms
  • Microsoft SQL Server and associated applications
  • Microsoft Azure, Office 365, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online
  • Authentication and authorization systems, including Active Directory, SSO, Azure AD, ADFS, and MFA
  • Enterprise storage, backup, and recovery infrastructure
  • Network, server, and workstation security, including firewalls and intrusion detection
  • Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems
  • Infrastructure monitoring and batch scripting

Day-to-day, you'll be:

  • Troubleshooting and resolving escalated Service Desk tickets
  • Supporting workstation imaging, distribution, and inventory tracking
  • Managing hardware, software, and firmware upgrades across platforms
  • Performing server and network security audits
  • Documenting infrastructure configurations and developing support procedures
  • Assisting with capacity planning, system monitoring, and performance reporting
  • Supporting IT infrastructure projects alongside the IT Architect
  • Providing overflow phone/queue support for the Service Desk when needed

There will be an on-call rotation shared across the IT team, along with occasional after-hours work for planned changes. Travel between offices is expected at about 10 to 15%, with rare visits to the data center as needed.

You might be a great fit if...

  • You're a natural troubleshooter who enjoys figuring out why something isn't working
  • You want a role where the scope grows as you do
  • You communicate well, both with technical colleagues and with non-IT staff who just need help
  • You take pride in building reliable systems, not just putting out fires
  • You're comfortable being on-call and know that critical infrastructure doesn't follow a 9-to-5

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in an IT-related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of IT support or network-related experience
  • Familiarity with Windows workstation and server environments (Windows 7/10 and Server 2008 through 2019)
  • Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving instincts
  • Valid driver's license for occasional travel between offices

Preferred, but not required:

  • Networking training or experience (CCNA, Network+)
  • A+ or Microsoft MCITP certification
  • VMware experience
