Job Preview

A Medical Technologist performs analytical laboratory testing on biological specimens to support diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. This role requires strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to oversee laboratory operations in the absence of supervisory staff. The technologist must be proficient in all assigned testing areas and capable of guiding MLTs, lab assistants, and phlebotomists when needed.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations and Technical Duties

• Perform all analytical testing within the laboratory, including specimen logging, test ordering, result reporting, and required documentation.

• Conduct blood tests and other diagnostic analyses on biological samples.

• Perform linearity studies and calibration verification testing.

• Review all sample results in assigned departments and ensure accuracy before release.

• Recognize erroneous or questionable results caused by specimen issues or analyzer malfunction.

• Review delta flags in the LIS to assess result reliability.

• Follow all policies for handling normal, abnormal, alert, and critical values, including special result‑handling procedures.

• Maintain complete knowledge of result processing, printing, and distribution workflows.

Quality Control and Compliance

• Interpret QC data, identify problems, notify the supervisor, and initiate troubleshooting.

• Utilize technical support hotlines appropriately when resolving QC or instrument issues.

• Maintain QC logs in the LIS and complete monthly statistics for submission to peer‑review organizations.

• Participate in laboratory-wide proficiency testing programs and internal blind sampling to demonstrate competency.

• Follow all safety practices in the laboratory safety manual and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Equipment and Information Systems

• Operate and troubleshoot the Laboratory Information System, including accessioning, ordering, and reporting.

• Perform routine and preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and maintain required documentation.

• Assist in evaluating new equipment and procedures and contribute to writing related policies and procedures.

• Must have graduated from an approved School of Medical Technology/Laboratory Science and be certified/registered by one of the following agencies: MLT(ASCP), MLT(AMT), CLT(NCA)

• High school diploma or equivalent required

• Associate degree or higher preferred

• Medical laboratory experience preferred

Compensation details: 30-35 Hourly Wage
