Position Overview The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform the duties of Vector Disease Surveillance Lead. Under general direction, conducts statewide human surveillance of infectious diseases and provides training and technical assistance on disease investigation procedures, including reporting, recommendations on control measures, laboratory testing and specimen submissions. Performs case reviews and reports new or unusual diseases and disease trends to the VBD Surveillance Administrator. Serves as working supervisor. Provides support for the the Lyme Disease Task Force. - Conducts statewide human surveillance of human tick- and mosquito-borne diseases while serving to educate and assist local health departments (LHDs) in case investigation procedures.
- Maintains case information in the Illinois Electronic Disease Surveillance System (IDSS) and local REDCap database.
- Coordinates the collection and submission of laboratory specimens for testing at IDPH and CDC laboratories of the arboviral and pathology branches.
- Acting Appointed IDPH Liaison to the Lyme Disease Task Force (LDTF) advisory board.
- Serves as working supervisor.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college with courses in health education, physical and biological sciences.
- Requires three (3) years of professional experience in a health education or investigation program in the public or private sector.
- Master’s or Master of Science degree in public health (MPH/MSPH) or similar area with a focus on epidemiology or infectious disease.
- One (1) year experience working with an electronic public health infectious disease surveillance system.
- One (1) year experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and PowerPoint.
- Training and certification in analytical and mapping tools, including Tableau, SAS and GIS.
- One (1) year experience working with local health departments, providing guidance on communicable disease surveillance.
