Job Description
The Director of Scientific Strategy Capabilities is responsible for leading the design, development, and execution of strategic initiatives that elevate scientific strategy and standards excellence across our Medical Affairs + Health Impact (MHI) organization. This leader will build and lead the Scientific Strategy capability within MHI, including Medical and Promotional Review, Scientific Platform, CFL (consistent with the FDA-required labeling), SIUU (scientific information on unapproved uses), integration of value framework into key strategic deliverables, and other key MHI transformation priorities worldwide.
This leader will play a critical role in shaping scientific engagement strategies, building capabilities, and ensuring MHI is positioned as a strategic driver of business success and patient impact. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Medical Affairs, scientific communications, cross-functional collaboration, and capability building, with a proven track record of navigating complex, matrixed environments.
Responsibilities:
- Build a cross-portfolio and worldwide MHI scientific strategy capability, focused on content, processes, and tools to optimize scientific impact, integrated across MHI (International, BU/US, V&E, ME, S&I, and Operations).
- Build and maintain strong and trusted relationships with TA senior leadership and teams to drive consistency, excellence, and innovation in scientific strategy and standards including Scientific Platform, CFL, SIUU, and Medical Review.
- Lead the strategic redesign and implementation of the Scientific Platform to incorporate the AbbVie value framework and enable enterprise alignment on the scientific narrative across strategic deliverables and external stakeholder engagements.
- Build and lead the Medical and Promotional Review standards worldwide capability (in-function/non-promotional, and promotional content), partnering directly with TAs and across the portfolio to drive impact through innovative and compliant strategies and functional execution aligned to brand, disease, and TA strategies.
- Partner with Strategic Resourcing Alignment and MHI TA teams to continually evolve Medical and Promotional Review resourcing models, including collecting and distributing promotional review metrics dashboard to ensure teams are adequately sized relative to this core capability
- Serve as Medical and Promotional Review Subject Matter Expert (SME) in enterprise medical/regulatory collaboration meetings to offer enterprise solutions to advancing compliant promotional resources and driving process efficiencies.
- Ensure consistent Medical Review onboarding and ongoing training / development programs in partnership with Leadership and Capabilities Development. Maintain a network amongst Medical Reviewers for communication of evolving processes, best practices, CFL opportunities, etc.
- Serve as MHI Brand Standards SME/lead partnering with Medical Engagement to advance Omnichannel/ACE capabilities (US Digital Lab & International) related to core claims and material review, to effectively scale across all MHI worldwide.
- Partner with Compliance, OEC Legal, and Regulatory Affairs to ensure strategic initiatives adhere to ethical and legal standards and to ensure training programs are fit for purpose and evolve in response to any monitoring findings/signals/trends.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across AbbVie, working closely with Commercial, therapeutic areas (TA), regulatory, IT, content excellence and other departments to align strategies and initiatives.
- Develop impact KPIs to measure effectiveness of scientific strategy capability initiatives and solutions and report progress to senior leadership with focus on continuous improvement.
- Stay updated on medical regulations and industry trends, keeping abreast of evolving medical regulations, guidelines, and industry trends. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and share knowledge and insights with the team to propose new strategies and initiatives.
This role will be a hybrid role base in Lake County, IL
Qualifications
- Advanced degree required (PharmD, DO, PhD, MD, MBA, master’s in science, RN, RPH, or related healthcare professional master’s degree).
- Minimum 15 years of combined Medical Affairs experience (may include a blend of commensurate commercial experience). Experience in transformation or organization change initiatives and cross- functional experience beneficial.
- Brand experience required, with demonstrated ability to translate business needs into strategically aligned functional plans. Experience with compliance and governance programs a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, articulate and negotiate projects and priorities across functions and leadership, without direct authority.
- Strong tactical execution and project management experience required. Record of successfully developing and implementing enterprise solutions/ capabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, executive presence, and relationship building skills required. Customer experience focused, both internally and externally. Ability to Interact with and influence all levels of management and across teams to develop strategies and execute action plans that will achieve the objectives.
- Excellent implementation, self-management and organizational skills; able to manage workload, set personal and team priorities and adjust as needed; ability to execute or implement deliverables in a timely manner.
- Strong business acumen: ability to think strategically and translate a strategy to an innovative and implementable plan.
- Experience in leading in a matrixed environment, across multiple functions, as well as in a virtual setting.
- Strong problem-solving skills: ability to anticipate and recognize problems, diagnose root causes and take corrective action to prevent recurrence within the team.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future. Salary: $156,000 - $296,500
