Essential Functions

• Inspects honeybee apiaries, colonies and equipment to detect control or eradicate bee diseases and parasites, Africanized bees or other nuisances to ensure compliance with the Illinois Bees & Apiaries Act.
• Provides recommendations for treatment or participates in the abatement of nuisance colonies as prescribed by law
• Compiles information and prepares certificates, notices, permits, reports, worksheets or other documentation on a routine basis. Reports information on all activities as directed and timely.
• Maintains accurate records of inspection activities and all documentation.
• Performs special inspections or surveys as directed.
• May travel to attend meeting of beekeepers or other groups to disseminate information relevant to the apiary inspection program.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

• Prefers working knowledge of apiculture and handling honeybees.
• Prefers elementary knowledge of bee diseases and parasites.

Under general supervision, inspects honey bee colonies for diseases and parasites, Africanized bees or other nuisances to ensure compliance with the Illinois Bees & Apiaries Act; investigates the source of infection or infestation in an assigned area; recommends treatment of or participates in the abatement of nuisance colonies; demonstrates methods for controlling or preventing the spread of diseases and parasites, Africanized bees or other nuisances. This position is not a full-time position. This is an intermittent position which is intended for seasonal or irregular work schedules. Benefit time is earned based on hours worked. Intermittent employees are limited to working 1,500 regular work hours in a fiscal year. Employees accrue vacation, sick and personal business leave on a prorated basis. Employees may be eligible to enroll in the State Insurance Program, with prorated premiums based on the amount of time worked in a 12-month period. Inspectors are responsible for traveling throughout an assigned region.This position requires residency in one of the following counties: Cass, Christian, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Mason, Menard, Montgomery, Morgan, Sangamon or Scott.
