Position Summary

The Assistant Dean for Medical Student Education, Phase II (0.6 FTE) is a key leader in the Office of Medical Education, responsible for overseeing the educational experiences of third-year medical students. This role supports the development, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the Phase II curriculum across all affiliated clinical sites. The Assistant Dean works collaboratively with faculty, clerkship directors, institutional leadership, and educational governance committees to ensure the highest quality of medical education.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCurricular Oversight & Development
  • Lead and support the day-to-day operations of Phase II within the Office of Medical Education.

  • Collaborate with faculty and clerkship directors to design and implement effective learning experiences, instructional methods, and course content aligned with best practices and educational research.

  • Support the annual review of the Phase II curriculum, including alignment with CMS educational objectives, monitoring of key performance metrics, ensuring comparability across all clinical sites, and addressing and tracking action items.

  • Ensure mechanisms are in place for timely and effective student feedback and use this data to support continuous improvement.

  • Ensure all Phase II curricular components meet LCME accreditation standards.

Clinical Site Coordination & Quality Assurance
  • Partner with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and clerkship directors to identify, develop, and maintain high-quality clinical training sites.

  • Monitor the comparability and consistency of required clerkship experiences across all affiliate locations.

  • Collect and analyze data to support continuous quality improvement at each site.

  • Facilitate timely and accurate submission of student grades for all Phase II courses.

Student Performance, Evaluation, and Progression
  • Oversee individual student progression throughout Phase II.

  • Provide input to the Student Evaluation, Progression, and Awards Committee (SEPAC).

Faculty Engagement & Development
  • Recruit, support, and mentor faculty and clinical educators to deliver high-quality instruction.

  • Promote faculty development initiatives that enhance teaching, assessment, and curriculum delivery.

  • Serve as a mentor and advisor to team members and collaborators involved in medical education.

Committee Participation & Governance
  • Serve on key educational committees, including the Year 3/Year 4 Subcommittee.

  • Assist in planning faculty development events such as fall and spring Curriculum Retreats.

Program Evaluation & Accreditation
  • Ensure compliance with LCME accreditation requirements and support all related processes, including the institutional self-study, Data Collection Instrument (DCI) preparation, and accreditation reporting.

Educational Innovation & Scholarship
  • Develop new elective opportunities to expand Phase II offerings.

  • Collaborate with the Center for Healthcare Simulation to align skills training with program objectives.

  • Engage in scholarly activity and research related to medical education and curriculum innovation.

  • Apply a scholarly approach to the design, delivery, and evaluation of educational programs.

Student Support & Advising
  • Participate in new student orientation and Guide to Professional Success (GPS) sessions

  • Oversee the Clerkship Lottery and Clinical Site Assignments

  • Oversee M3 planning, resources, protocols, and student schedules

  • Partner with ADA coordinator to implement student accommodations during Phase II

Communication & Leadership
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and accountability across departments and sites.

  • Communicate effectively to motivate teams, manage conflict, and negotiate with stakeholders.

  • Promote a positive, student-centered learning environment that supports professional growth.

Other Duties
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Dean for Medical Education

Conditions of Employment

  • Must achieve satisfactory results from a background check

Required Education & Experience

  • MD or DO degree

  • Eligible for a faculty appointment

  • Leadership experience in undergraduate or graduate medical education

  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher and/or mentor of medical students

  • Commitment to medical education


Required Knowledge

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational and managerial skills

  • Ability to design and work within complex systems

  • Knowledge of current national initiatives and innovations in medical education

  • Understanding of accreditation requirements in medical education

  • Effective team building and team-based collaboration skills

  • Ability to implement effective programs which promote excellence in teaching and learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a clerkship director or assistant clerkship director

  • Prior experience as a leader (e.g. Assistant or Associate Dean, Clerkship Director) in undergraduate medical education
