Senior Automation Controls Engineer

Location: Greater Chicagoland Area - Onsite

Employment Type: 6+ month Contract with potential to go contract to direct hire

Automated Systems, Inc. is seeking a Senior Automation Controls Engineer to join our team. In this role, you’ll lead the design, development, and troubleshooting of cutting-edge process automation and control systems from concept through commissioning. You'll play a critical role in delivering full-scope hardware and software solutions for a range of automation projects, driving innovation across highly regulated environments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead design and development of application/control systems of varying complexity
• Develop and evaluate innovative system solutions to meet project requirements
• Modify program and system logic across interconnected systems and subsystems
• Gain proficiency in a range of programming languages and control device networks (PLCs and PCs)
• Collaborate with clients to define project scope, timelines, and deliverables
• Work effectively in a matrix environment with a strong focus on customer satisfaction
• Provide on-site support and commissioning (10–25% travel required)

Technical Skills & Qualifications:

• Hands-on experience with Rockwell Automation platforms: ControlLogix, PLC5, SLC500, RSView, PanelView Plus, RSBizWare, RSBatch
• Familiarity with other PLC platforms (GE, Siemens, Modicon) and SCADA/HMI packages (iFix, Wonderware)
• Experience designing control system electrical packages is preferred
• Strong knowledge of control system networks (Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, etc.)
• Background in instrumentation is a plus
• Familiarity with biopharmaceutical processes and GMP/validation protocols is highly desirable
• Understanding of S88 batch standards and batch system implementation is a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong leadership presence
• Must possess a valid driver’s license

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
• 6+ years of relevant experience in automation and process control systems (or equivalent education and experience)
• Strong troubleshooting and process control skills required
• Prior experience with validation in pharmaceutical/biotech environments is highly preferred
• Experience in a technical leadership role is a plus
