JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Manager and Camp Directors, the Turf & Surf Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, preparing, and participating in camp activities. These positions run for 8 weeks, in addition to training days scheduled prior to the start of camp. Camp Counselors will work with children ranging in age from 9-13 years, in groups of 5-20 campers. Activities include but are not limited to; swimming, completing crafts, group games, table activities, nature activities, gym activities, and much more. Counselors are expected to interact with campers throughout their entire shift, lead and/or assist with activities, be a team-player, and ensure campers are always safe. Additional duties include behavior management, clean-up of the camp staff room, craft/activity prep, and other duties as assigned. This is an at-will position.
Turf & Surf Camp Dates: June 15th - August 7th
Orientation Dates: Starting in Mid-May with details to follow.
Hours: Monday – Friday availability between 8:00am – 4:00pm
Location: Main St. Rec. Center, 501 Hill Ave., AND Spring Ave. Rec. Center, 185 Spring Ave., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137
PLEASE NOTE: Expectation is that you will be available for the entire 8-week program with a limit of one week of absence for a scheduled family vacation or similar that should be discussed at time of hire. Various shift options are available and can be discussed during the interview process.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to swim and pass a swim test with comfort and confidence being in the water with campers.
- Ability to ride a bicycle, provide your own bike, and pass a bicycle safety test.
- Ability to bike three to five miles one way, up to ten miles round trip.
- Ability to assist campers with bike adjustments, including seat height and minor repairs, such as chain resets.
- Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-based games and activities.
- Able to maintain attention, high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.
- Specific vision abilities required, to include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception to properly lead bike rides, navigate roads and follow signage, interpret equipment function/readings, complete recordkeeping, etc.
- Strong voice and listening skills with the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds (i.e. vehicles/machinery, alarms/sirens, phone or other communication device, etc.)
- Ability to spend majority of the time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions including high heat and humidity.
- Capable of lifting, moving and/or carrying up to 25 pounds, such as backpacks or biking gear.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
- The ideal candidate will be outgoing, reliable, self-motivated, and creative with a strong interest in working with children.
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Prior experience working with children of multiple ages is recommended.
- Previous camp experience is a plus.
- Preference given to candidates working towards a degree in education, recreation, or similar field.
- Ability to effectively communicate with participants, their parents, and the public.
- Ability to maintain discretion regarding confidential matters and/or information.
- Proficient in MS Outlook or other email system for communication with the aptitude to learn and use other applications.
- CPR/AED/First Aid certified, or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire. (We will provide)
Reliable transportation to and from work is required.
