The Office of Undergraduate Programs in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for an Assistant Director, Academy for Excellence in Engineering (AE3) position. This position is responsible for: (a) designing and coordinating programs that support the development of faculty teaching skills and (b) promoting faculty engagement in and recognition for engineering education efforts within The Grainger College of Engineering, the campus, and beyond.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Faculty Development
o Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Collins Scholar program for new faculty, including the development of classroom observation programs and the training of faculty peer observers and Student Consultants on Teaching (SCOTs).
o Collaboratively develop, implement, and evaluate the Scholarship and Teaching for Engineering Postdocs (STEP) program for postdoctoral research associates to support their research, teaching, and employability; this includes the evaluation of participants’ assessments related to teaching.
o Develop and facilitate routine sustained faculty development opportunities, including but not limited to book circles, themed professional learning communities, extended seminar series, and course re- design/revision working groups.
o Liaise with Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL) staff to promote Grainger faculty engagement in campus level programming, both as presenters and participants; serve on CITL working groups, as requested.
- Work closely with the CBTF Assistant Director in providing operational oversight for the Computer-Based Testing Facility (CBTF) for all related programming; participate in CBTF advisory groups for students and faculty, as requested.
- Consult with Strategic Instructional Innovations Program (SIIP) teams annually and support project research, dissemination, and sustainability efforts.
- Represent AE3 on the ENG 580 course planning team; attend ENG 580 regularly, present as requested, and support program revision over time.
- Develop and assess peer observation and mentoring program for Engineering Learning Assistants (ELAs) in the Grainger First-Year Experience (GFX) program and train new ELAs in the ENG 377 course (to prepare them for ENG 100 and 101 courses).
- Lead the planning and execution of The Grainger College of Engineering Celebration of Teaching event annually.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, or philosophy
AND
Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching
OR - Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities
AND
Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D or Ed.D. in engineering, STEM education, education, or other closely related field.
- A total of three (3) years (36 months) in education, training and/or work experience in engineering, STEM education, education, or other closely related field.
- Experience in faculty instructional developmental programs.
- Experience with learning analytics, institutional assessment processes, or program evaluation.
- Experience mentoring faculty or graduate students related to teaching innovation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to apply research and evidence to improve instructional practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with little supervision.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time Civil Service Instructional Development Specialist-3289 position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $75,000 - $80,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
