What You Will Do
- The Summer Writing Camp is accepting applications for a few full-time, temporary Recreation Counselors.
- Presented by the Department of English Language and Literature, Writing Camp is open to students age 8 – 18 (grade 3 – 12) and offers intensive and practical development in basic writing skills in combination with a fun and vigorous recreational program.
- The camp director will be assisted by a staff comprised of area elementary and secondary school teachers, University instructors and recreational counselors.
- Students are grouped according to grade level, with groups averaging approximately 12 students. Total camp enrollment is limited to 72 campers.
- Session runs July 6-17, 2026 - Monday-Friday.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in/completed a B.A. program
- Has previous recreational experience working with children in a summer camp (at least one summer).

About Extra Help Positions:
Extra Help job listings typically close three days after the opening date, unless specified in the closing date. Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within the university. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Workdays and hours may vary according to departmental requirements. Extra Help employees do not receive SIUE benefits, holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.
Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with SIUE, including your position on and Civil Service register. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment.
Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.
Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois Driver’s License or state of Illinois ID Card. Failure to produce the required documentation within 180 calendar days will result in immediate termination of employment.

The screening process will encompass a criminal background check and, where applicable, other background checks such as a drug screen, verification of employment and education or licensure/certification, reference checks, and/or checks with relevant government registries. Please note that all job offers are contingent upon successful completion of the required screening process.
Additional Information: SIUE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States and visa sponsorship for this position will not be provided. International students at SIUE on F-1 or J-1 visas are not eligible for full-time or part-time civil service positions with permanent status.
