Job Summary
Employees in positions allocated to this series are responsible for moving and transporting people, equipment, supplies, furniture, materials, rubbish, mail, and freight with a gross vehicle weight capacity of less than 26,001 pounds, and people (up to 15 persons). Their activities include physically lifting and moving supplies, equipment, etc.; driving vehicles; and may involve manual unskilled labor. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Automotive Transportation management transport personnel, supplies and equipment for Facilities & Services and designated customers.
  • Loads, secures, hauls, and delivers equipment, supplies, furniture, materials, refuse, rubbish, recycling, parcels, and freight, with a gross vehicle weight capacity of less than 26,001 pounds as directed by supervision.
  • Checks vehicle for general condition (such as tire inflation, oil, water level, etc.); may perform minor repair work on vehicle and keeps appropriate records and paperwork.
  • May perform unskilled labor of a manual nature (as differentiated from skilled or mechanical work normally associated with the skilled trades) that does not conflict with local labor practice
  • Performs snow removal work
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Additional Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Valid current driver's license as required by the State of Illinois.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of applicable traffic laws; locations, names and addresses of University buildings; names and locations of University streets and the most efficient routes among points on campus. Must be proficient at safely securing supplies, equipment, furniture and rubbish.
  • Thorough understanding of University and F&S vehicle policies, F&S policies and procedures, including filing of accident reports and immediately reporting problems to the immediate supervisor.
  • A basic understanding and ability to use computers, tablets and other electronic devices.
  • Skill in operating auxiliary equipment (such as tail gate lifts, snow plows, or refuse equipment) and ability to proficiently operate various vehicle types within their current licensing classification.
  • Must have an elementary knowledge of auto mechanics and be able to fuel vehicles, check their fluid levels and add fluids as necessary, and detect and
  • report malfunctions/damage of vehicles and their systems.
  • Ability to safely perform heavy lifting (50 lbs. minimum), pushing, and pulling along with ability to move equipment and supplies on and off trucks.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions including maintaining appropriate records as required

Appointment Information

The Driver is a is 100% time position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The hourly rate for this position is $32.41 and the unit has two vacancies. Sponsorship for this position is not available.
