Maintenance Journeyman I

The Village of Western Springs is accepting applications to fill a Maintenance Journeyman I (MJI) position vacancy in the Municipal Services Department.

Key Responsibilities

This position performs heavy manual work functions related to maintenance, repair, and/or road construction utilizing safe work habits. The incumbent operates complex equipment and machinery used in development projects and is part of a team that completes a variety of activities to ensure the proper maintenance of Village infrastructure. Sample duties include but are not limited to snow and ice removal; repair water main breaks; perform right-of-way maintenance, maintain sewer infrastructure, forestry, and leaf clean up. In addition, this position may perform fleet and equipment maintenance and repair and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and the ability and desire to continue education and training as needed by the position.
• Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Class D driver’s license
• Must be able to obtain a valid Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement required within the first 6 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• MJI: 6 months to one year experience/training in public works, underground utility work, automotive mechanics, or a related field is a plus.

Physical Demands/Work Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions including rain, snow, extreme heat and cold, wind, bright sun, and other elements of nature. Work activity includes frequent lifting of heavy objects of at least 50-70 pounds and the ability to drive and operate light and heavy-duty equipment. The employee works near moving parts and vehicles and is exposed to wet and slippery surfaces. Employee may have exposure to chemicals, loud noise, and vibration.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting to mid hourly pay range for the MJI position is $25.76 – $30.74. Starting pay rate is dependent upon qualifications and experience. Medical, dental, life insurance, paid time off, and defined pension through IMRF are included with this position.
