Title: Full time Streets Superintendent
Position Summary
The Street Superintendent is a highly responsible and supervisory position that plans, organizes, directs, and supervises all maintenance, repair, and construction activities for the City of Marquette Heights' infrastructure, parks, and city-owned buildings . This comprehensive role includes direct oversight of streets, sidewalks, traffic controls, storm sewers, public parks, and all municipal facilities. The Superintendent acts as the primary leader for all Streets, Parks and Buildings Department operations , requiring technical expertise, strong management skills, and mandatory hands-on involvement, especially during emergencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
I. Streets and Infrastructure Management
● Street Maintenance: Directs and participates in the repair and maintenance of all City streets, rights-of-way, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks (patching, crack sealing, etc.).
● Snow and Ice Control: Plans, coordinates, and leads all snow and ice removal operations , including staff scheduling, equipment readiness, and material forecasting.
● Storm Sewer System: Oversees the inspection, cleaning, repair, and maintenance of the City's storm sewer and drainage systems.
● Vegetation/Pest Control: Plans and oversees the application of herbicides and pesticides for weed control within street rights-of-way, requiring a current Pesticide License .
● Signage and Traffic Control: Responsible for the installation, maintenance, and replacement of all regulatory, informational, and street name signs and markings.
II. Parks and Grounds Maintenance
● Park Maintenance: Directs and participates in the care, maintenance, and upkeep of all City parks, recreational areas, and public grounds.
● Turf Management: Oversees and performs mowing, trimming, weeding, and treating of park land and other City-owned properties.
● Facilities and Amenities: Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and inspection of playground equipment, park benches, picnic tables, athletic fields, parking lots, and walking paths.
● Landscaping: Manages the planting and care of trees, shrubs, and ornamental landscaping in public areas.
III. City Buildings and Facilities Maintenance
● Facility Upkeep: Oversees and performs necessary routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs for all municipal buildings, including City Hall, Liberty Hall, Concession Stand, the Street Department facility, and other public structures.
● Mechanical Systems: Manages the maintenance schedules and coordinates necessary repairs for building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and security systems .
● Building Inspections: Conducts regular inspections of City buildings to identify structural, safety, or maintenance issues and prioritizes necessary repairs.
IV. Administration, Supervision, and Compliance
● Supervision: Supervises, trains, mentors, and directs all Street Department staff, ensuring proper task assignment and execution across all three areas of responsibility (Streets, Parks, Buildings).
● Budgeting: Assists in the preparation and management of the annual operating budget for the Streets, Parks, and Buildings Department.
● Safety and Training: Develops, implements, and enforces safety policies, procedures, and training programs specific to all tasks, including equipment operation, chemical handling, and building maintenance safety (e.g., ladder use, lock-out/tag-out).
● Communication: Responds promptly and professionally to inquiries and complaints from City residents, other departments, and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience: Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in public works, construction, or maintenance, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity overseeing multiple maintenance areas (e.g., streets, parks, facilities).
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical schooling, specialized training, or an Associate's/Bachelor's degree is highly desirable.
- Certifications/Licensure:
○ Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B (or higher) with appropriate endorsements is required, or must be obtained within six months of hire date.
○ Pesticide License: Must possess or be able to obtain the Illinois Commercial Not-for-Hire Applicator License from the IDOA (typically Category 6 - Right-of-Way) within six (6) months of hire .
- Residency: Must be able to respond to emergencies within a reasonable timeframe, potentially requiring Marquette Heights or nearby residency.

Pay : $24.44 - $35.78 per hour

Schedule :
· Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ability and willingness to respond to after-hours call backs and emergency situations as necessary
