Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience License: Active IL license required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience - Experience working on a dedicated neuro unit - Heparin gtt experience Description: The unit has a total of 54 beds. Patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day shift and 1:5-6 during the night shift. Common diagnoses include strokes, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and various neuroscience cases. There is a charge nurse available 24/7 who does not take an assignment unless staffing is short. A house supervisor is also present 24/7. Nurse aides/patient care techs are assigned on the unit with a ratio of 1:9-10 during days and evenings, and 1:10-12 during nights. Registered nurses are required to titrate drips, including heparin titrated based on PTT. High flow equipment, such as CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow, is rarely used on the unit. There are telemetry technicians available for monitoring; nurses do not need to read their own strips. Shifts are structured as 12-hour shifts, with weekend requirements every other weekend and holiday requirements every other holiday. Floating may occur, requiring nurses to be competent in skills applicable to the new unit, with assigned support from trained nurses. Tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only ear piercings are allowed. Orientation involves 2 days of training with an educator followed by hands-on patient care with a preceptor.
