Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Acute Med Surg Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year License: Active IL license required Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Post-op care of patients, critical thinking skills, good bedside manner, team player Description: The unit features 63 beds, including 49 private and 9 observation beds. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5 patients per RN during days, and 5-6 patients per RN during nights. Common diagnoses and types of patients include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, overflow medical, dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, and TPN. RNs are not required to titrate drips; the only common titratable drip is Heparin. There is a Charge Nurse on each shift, who does not take an assignment, along with a House Supervisor available 24/7. Patient care techs are present on the unit, with ratios of 7-10 patients per PCT during days and 10-15 patients per PCT during nights. PCTs assist with vitals, accu checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation. RNs are not required to manage vents, but they do handle CPAP and high flow systems. Respiratory Therapy manages nebulizer treatments, while RNs manage inhalers and can place patients on CPAP. Some patients are on telemetry, utilizing Phillips monitors, but bedside RNs do not read strips, as there is a central station for monitor techs. RNs are expected to float to units with the same level of experience, and if an ICU RN floats to a general unit, they will take a team of three patients. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend, covering both Saturday and Sunday. Holiday shifts rotate every other holiday. Travelers do not self-schedule and will be the first to float when needed. Scrubs in any color are accepted. Unit-specific orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor, plus one shift for EPIC training and professional orientation.
