Job Summary
The Medical Director of the General Medicine Clinic (GMC) provides medical leadership in the GMC which currently provides over 45,000 primary care provider visits per year and nearly 10,000 nursing care management visits for a diverse and complex population of patients. The Medical Director will have specific oversight of all physicians and advanced practice providers within the unit. This mix of providers will include attendings, residents, advance practice nurses, and physician assistants. The Medical Director will have the ongoing and primary responsibility for defining the evolving roles and responsibilities of the aforementioned personnel. The Medical Director will help ensure provider engagement in ongoing quality improvement projects within the unit. The Medical Director will ensure that regulatory standards are being met.
General Administrative Responsibilities
Collective Bargaining
- Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals
- Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions and working meetings
Discipline
- Document, recommend and effectuate discipline at all levels
- Work closely with labor relations and/or labor counsel to effectuate and enforce applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Initiate, authorize and complete disciplinary action pursuant to CCH system rules, policies, procedures and provision of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Supervision
- Direct and effectuate CCH management policies and practices
- Access and proficiently navigate CCH records system to obtain and review information necessary to execute provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Management
- Contribute to the management of CCH staff and CCH’ systemic development and success
- Discuss and develop CCH system policies and procedures
- Consistently use independent judgment to identify operational staffing issues and needs and perform the following functions as necessary; hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, direct or discipline employees pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when necessary
Typical Duties
- Supervises and delegates clinical roles for all physicians and advance practice provider staff within the health center.
- Oversees the scheduling and work effort for provider staff within the health center.
- Assists leadership with the interview and hiring process.
- Participates in disciplinary process of staff.
- Supports staff training and development initiatives.
- Works closely with the GMC clinic managers & administrators to form a cohesive leadership team with a strong collaboration model.
- Works with the Chair of General Medicine & the Director of the Ambulatory Network to ensure the ongoing development, improvement, and implementation of new care paradigms, innovations, protocols, and procedures.
- Implements & enforces productivity and revenue efforts within the unit.
- Supports quality assurance/quality improvement efforts at the health center.
- Monitors, audits, and enforces regulatory standards as set forth by The Joint Commission
- Provides education & orientation to new processes and procedures for provider and ancillary personnel.
- Attends General Medicine & Ambulatory Network Leadership Meetings.
- Participates in community-based activities.
- Serves as liaison with medical departments.
- Partakes in a minimum 60% of time in clinical duties entailing six (6) clinical sessions per week, 40% time allocation for managerial and administrative responsibilities in GMC/division, including defined quality improvement work.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (D.O.) from an accredited college or university
- Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
- Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
- Board certification in Internal Medicine
- Five (5) years of experience as a Primary Care Attending Physician
- Two (2) years of experience in medical leadership, management, or health care administration
- Must be able to travel to work sites throughout Cook County, as needed

- Knowledge of the principles and methods of training medical staff to ensure standard of medical care
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong attention to detail, analytical, and organizational skills
- Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups

- Ability to meet department and divisional productivity thresholds
- Ability to meet appropriate confidentiality standards for protected health information (PHI)
- Ability to work respectfully and effectively with patients and staff in a culturally diverse work environment
- Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices incorporating the use of the electronic health record (EHR)
- Ability to work effectively in teams across disciplines
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed
- Must be able to travel to work sites throughout Cook County
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
