Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking an Office Assistant to work in the mail room at Lawrence Correctional Center. This position is responsible for receiving, processing, and inspecting all incoming individual in custody mail. In addition, they will receive, process, and distribute all incoming and outgoing Privileged and Legal mail, process money vouchers, receive and distribute all incoming institutional mail and print incoming and outgoing individual in custody email messages. Essential Functions

  • Receives, processes, and inspects all incoming individual in custody mail.
  • Receives, processes, and distributes all incoming and outgoing Privileged and Legal Mail in compliance with IL Administrative Code – DR 525, Subpart B, Mail and Telephone Calls and Institutional Directive 05.025.001, Mail Procedures, AD 05.02.15/Mail Procedures for Individuals in Custody; ID 04.525.00/Mail Procedures.
  • Processes money vouchers (requests for payment) for all individual in custody mail needing extra postage or requesting special services, such as Certified, Return Receipt, or Check Requests.
  • Receives and distributes all incoming institutional mail to respective departments.
  • Prints incoming and outgoing individual in custody email messages using the Global Tel Link (GTL) system.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school and one (1) year of related office experience.
  • Requires ability to keyboard accurately at 35 words per minute.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
