Precision CNC Setup Machinist (Mills & Lathes)

Aegis is partnered with a precision manufacturing company experiencing sustained growth, and they’re adding skilled CNC machinists who own the process from setup through final inspection. This is true hands-on machining—not just button pushing—where you’ll prepare, run, and refine jobs on both CNC mills and lathes to deliver tight-tolerance metal components.

A day in the life

You start by reviewing blueprints and GD&T, staging tools, and setting up a 3–4 axis VMC or a 2–4 axis lathe. You load the program, set work and tool offsets, and fine-tune feeds and speeds. You cut the first piece, perform first-article checks with micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and bore gauges, and then run steady in-process inspections. As materials change—stainless, carbon steel, aluminum—you adjust strategy, troubleshoot tool wear, and correct dimensional drift to keep every feature within spec.

What you’ll handle

• Independently set up and operate CNC mills and lathes from kickoff to completion
• Load, verify, and adjust programs right at the machine
• Edit feeds, speeds, and tool/work offsets to optimize results
• Interpret blueprints and GD&T to plan accurate setups
• Execute first-piece and in-process inspections
• Use precision metrology: micrometers, calipers, height and bore gauges
• Machine stainless, carbon steels, and aluminum alloys
• Diagnose tool wear and address dimensional variation

Background that excels here

• 3+ years of CNC machining experience
• Proven setup-to-complete-part ownership
• Experience on both mills and lathes
• Solid blueprint reading and GD&T fluency
• Comfort with Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, and/or Okuma controls
• Ability to edit G- and M-code as needed

Bonus skills

• Multi-axis machining exposure
• Familiarity with Mastercam
• On-machine or offline programming experience
• Technical trade school or formal machining education
