Provides college-wide leadership and direction for the development and implementation of biosecurity, safety, injury management, personal protective equipment and training program development and delivery.


Associate Director of Biosecurity & Safety

Duties & Responsibilities

Program Implementation & Compliance Operations

  • Implement and manage day-to-day biosecurity, occupational health, safety, injury management, and PPE programs.
  • Support execution of the college’s strategic safety priorities.
  • Serve on and coordinate OSHB Committee and subcommittee activities (agendas, minutes, follow-ups).
  • Work with departments to implement and maintain safety programs aligned with college standards.
  • Monitor regulatory and accreditation compliance requirements.
  • Review laboratory safety audits, track findings, and facilitate corrective actions.

Operational Compliance & Resource Coordination

  • Assess safety equipment, training needs, and facility concerns; provide recommendations to the Associate Dean for Research.
  • Monitor program expenditures and assist with purchasing and budget tracking.
  • Coordinate corrective actions related to safety audits and facilities issues.
  • Maintain documentation and ensure audit readiness.

Training, Emergency Preparedness & Program Support

  • Coordinate and deliver safety training sessions; assist in developing training materials.
  • Maintain and update Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAP) documentation and onboarding records.
  • Provide safety orientation for new hires and graduate students

Minimum Qualifications (Associate Director of Biosecurity & Safety)

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental health, environmental engineering, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of professional experience in occupational health, safety, laboratory compliance, or a related regulatory field.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting regulatory compliance programs and safety training initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science
  • Experience within a veterinary clinical organization
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., ASCP, CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent) preferred based on program needs

Director of Biosecurity & Safety

Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Biosecurity/Safety Oversight

  • Provide college-wide leadership and direction for biosecurity, occupational health, safety, injury management, and PPE programs.
  • Develop and implement the strategic management plan for college-wide safety priorities.
  • Participate and coordinate the Occupational Safety, Health, and Biosecurity (OSHB) Committee and subcommittees.
  • Guide departments and service units in customizing comprehensive safety programs across service, research, and teaching.
  • Hold primary responsibility for federal, state, and local compliance and external accreditation standards (AAHA, AVMA, COE, DRS).
  • Oversee annual laboratory safety audits and ensure high-level resolution of compliance and facilities issues.

Strategic Compliance & Resource Management

  • Advise the Associate Dean and Dean on prioritization of facility, training, and equipment needs.
  • Establish budget priorities and oversee biosecurity and safety expenditures.
  • Evaluate safety infrastructure and equipment to ensure long-term effectiveness and risk mitigation.
  • Lead strategic initiatives to strengthen safety culture and institutional risk management.

Training, Emergency Preparedness & Instruction

  • Develop and deliver college-wide safety and biosecurity training programs.
  • Provide biosafety instruction to veterinary students and other learners.
  • Manage and oversee Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAP) for all CVM facilities.
  • Provide building and laboratory safety orientation for new hires and graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications (Director of Biosecurity & Safety)

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental health, environmental engineering, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Six (6) years of professional work experience in occupational health, safety, laboratory compliance, or related regulatory oversight.
  • Demonstrated experience leading safety or compliance programs, including policy development and regulatory interpretation.
  • Experience overseeing laboratory safety, occupational health programs, and/or public health compliance initiatives.
  • Experience developing and delivering training and testing programs in regulated environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science
  • Experience within a veterinary clinical organization
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., ASCP, CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent) preferred based on program needs

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5013 - Safety/Environmental Compliance Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The budgeted salary range for the Associate Director position is $90,000 to $100,000. The Director position is $95,000 to $105,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
