Registered Nurses will coordinate the nursing care for the infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in the holding and post anesthesia care areas. Each will work cooperatively with other patient care personnel inside and outside the department to coordinate continuity of care for patients and families throughout the surgical process while maintaining standards for professional nursing practice. The person in this position is accountable to the Director of Surgery. Must exhibit guest relation skills.

Position Accountabilities

The Registered Nurse providing patient care in the pre-operative holding area:

Manage patient admissions to preoperative area

Assess the status of patients’ health in pre-op and ensure accuracy of identification wristband.

Ensure that operative and informed consents are signed by the patient, witnessed, and signed by the surgeon prior to surgery.

Verify procedure and site marking is accurate and that all parties are in agreement prior to transfer to operating room.

Reviewing the patient chart by becoming familiar with orders including but not limited to lab orders and results, radiology orders and results, H & P’s and updates, consents.

Completes medication reconciliation. Performs patient assessments and documents in the electronic patient record along with the nursing care plan.

Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for surgical procedure and initiate IVs and ensure that patients are informed about the procedure the surgery process. Update families often and as appropriate.

Explaining procedures/treatment/discharge to patient and family members to alley apprehension and to verify understanding of procedure/discharge I. Assuring needed supplies and equipment is available as needed for patient care.

Collaborating with peri-operative team, anesthesiologist and surgeon for continuum of patient care and discharge

Providing individualized discharge education and teaching as appropriate.

Maintaining awareness of patient’s safety needs at all times while continuously maintaining focus on patient’s condition during their time in the pre-operative holding area.

Assisting with patient’s transfer of care to the operating room or endoscopy suite as needed and upon request.

Position Qualifications:

Candidate must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing

A minimum of one year medical/surgical experience preferred

Must be registered in the state of Illinois

Current CPR certification

ACLS and PALS certification preferred
