Assistant General Manager

Position Summary

The Venue Assistant Manager oversees daily operations of Han Cha (tea service) and the Yunomi Bar (cocktail program) at the Stony Island Arts Bank, owning the guest experience, leading the team, and protecting the quality, financial, and cultural standards of both concepts.Operations & Service

• Open and close both venues; keep the space, equipment, and stations clean and service-ready.
• Run daily Han Cha tea service and the Yunomi Bar to the highest standard.
• Manage pacing, reservations (OpenTable), and guest flow; handle escalated guest issues.
• Enforce all health, safety, and sanitation standards and liquor-service laws at all times.

Team Leadership

• Schedule, train, and supervise tea staff, bartenders, servers, bussers, and dishwashers.
• Set the standard for hospitality and pace; coach and correct performance issues promptly.

Menu, Beverage & Presentation Quality

• Ensure the quality, consistency, and plating of the prix fixe menu, course by course.
• Hold recipe consistency, presentation, and specs across both menus every service.
• Partner with ownership on menu changes, seasonal offerings, and pricing.

Inventory, Cost & Compliance

• Manage tea, spirits, and supply inventory; place and receive orders with approved vendors.
• Track product usage and costs in Square; flag waste, shrinkage, and cost overruns.
• Maintain required liquor-license compliance and keep service within legal hours and limits.
• Reconcile daily sales and tips accurately.

Stewardship of the Space, Art & Ceramics

• Safeguard the wall art: keep it clear of food and drink, never touch or move it, and report any damage immediately.
• Handle and store all ceramic ware with care, and train staff to do the same to prevent chips and breakage.
• Treat the Arts Bank and its contents as a cultural landmark to be protected, not just a venue.

Communication & Reporting Cadence

• Meet with the Owner before the start of each service week to review expected guests and covers for the week and weekend.
• Keep written notes of issues as they arise and review them with the Owner at the end of the service day or the start of the next day.
• Recap the past week and weekend with the Owner on Sunday evening or Monday — overall service, corrections, and any supply or inventory needs.

Cultural Representation & Growth

• Serve as a warm, gracious ambassador for Han Cha, Yunomi, and Theaster Gates’s world, welcoming every guest in a way that reflects the dignity and creativity of the South Side of Chicago.
• Uphold the Han Cha and Yunomi brand in every guest interaction; support events and press with ownership and PR; and surface ideas to grow revenue and margins.

Must have BASSET Certification, Chicago Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate, and Chicago allergen training.
