Construction Controller
Position Summary: The Controller leads the Accounting Department and plays a critical role in shaping the financial health of the organization. This position requires a seasoned professional with a strong background in accounting within the construction or engineering sectors. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, skilled communicator, and data-driven financial analyst. This role is responsible for delivering accurate and insightful financial reports to senior leadership, driving operational efficiency, and supporting sustainable growth across the company.
Essential Responsibilities:- Deliver timely and actionable financial reports to senior leadership by analyzing key performance indicators and financial data.
- Support strategic decision-making by applying company policies to current economic conditions.
- Lead the budgeting process, ensuring alignment with organizational goals through proactive planning and analysis.
- Enhance payroll operations through process innovation and system optimization.
- Collaborate on short- and long-term operational strategies to drive financial performance.
- Oversee all accounting functions, ensuring compliance with GAAP, regulatory standards, and funding requirements.
- Maintain robust internal controls across revenue, expenditures, and budgets.
- Partner with the CEO to establish financial benchmarks, reporting standards, and performance monitoring protocols.
- Standardize accounting policies and procedures across all programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to the accounting team, fostering a culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, reconcile balance sheet accounts, and manage journal entries including accruals and prepaids.
- Conduct bank reconciliations and manage the Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedule, including over/under billing adjustments.
- Administer bi-monthly payroll and associated tax filings.
- Coordinate with external CPA firms for year-end audits and reviews.
- Lead additional audits, including annual workers’ compensation audits.
- Perform other duties as assigned by senior leadership.
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in senior-level accounting or finance roles within the construction or engineering industry.
- Proficiency with SAGE 100 Contractor (formerly Master Builder) or similar construction accounting platforms.
- Strong understanding of banking operations and economic principles.
- Demonstrated experience managing multi-state payroll and streamlining accounting workflows.
- Proven track record in financial project management and data analysis.
- Solid knowledge of tax compliance and financial reporting standards.

Working Conditions:
- Primarily office-based with standard business hours (minimum 40 hours/week).
- Occasional schedule flexibility may be required for special projects or deadlines.

Relationships: Collaborates closely with Human Resources, Operations, and IT teams to ensure financial alignment across departments.
