Precision Tooling Machinist
About the role
Imagine stepping into a well-equipped toolroom where prints become parts and ideas become cutting tools. As a Precision Tooling Machinist, you transform detailed drawings into the jigs, fixtures, dies, gauges, and specialized cutters that keep manufacturing running smoothly. You alternate between creation and repair—building new tools, refining old ones, and ensuring everything you touch returns to service ready for production.
What your day looks like
Early in the shift, you pull the latest job prints, study the dimensions, and verify tolerances with calibrated measuring devices. You choose materials and setups, then cut, grind, and finish to spec using lathes, grinders, and other toolroom machines. Between builds, you sharpen cutting tools, check toolholders, and return everything to its proper place—documenting check-in/check-out so the team always knows what’s available.
When a machine center needs a setup, you assemble complete setup kits so production can move quickly. You diagnose wear, determine if a repair will restore performance, and either fix or requisition replacement components to maintain stock levels. Throughout, you communicate clearly with supervisors and peers—by phone, email, and in person—staying cool under pressure and moving efficiently from one task to the next with minimal errors.
Core responsibilities
- Interpret blueprints and job prints; fabricate or modify tooling accordingly.
- Sharpen and maintain tools; verify toolholders are service-ready before storage.
- Repair tools or request replacement parts, tooling, and hardware to sustain inventory.
- Manage toolroom log: check tooling in and out accurately.
- Set up and operate toolroom machinery (including lathes and grinders) to produce form tools, taps, drills, and holders.
- Assemble complete setup kits for machines as needed.
What you bring
- Background in fastener manufacturing preferred, especially with heading operations.
- Comfort communicating across shifts and functions; steady under time-sensitive conditions.
- Strong organization and prioritization; able to pivot quickly without sacrificing accuracy.
- Working knowledge of IATF 16949 quality expectations.
- Sound deductive reasoning to apply general rules to specific, real-world problems.
- Ability to adjust equipment for speed, pressure, temperature, dimensions, and material flow.
- Basic heading maintenance familiarity.
- Proficiency with calipers, micrometers, and blueprint reading.
- Consistent adherence to OSHA and company safety standards.
Tools of the trade: lathes, grinders, measuring instruments, and the skills of a tool and die maker who produces jigs, fixtures, dies, gauges, and other precision tooling used throughout the manufacturing process.
Work setup: 100% onsite at a single location.
Quality culture: You’ll operate within a disciplined, standards-driven environment where craftsmanship and documentation go hand-in-hand.
